Lane assist works!

Had the officer pulled ahead and slowed in front of the sleeping driver’s vehicle, would the vehicle have slowed and stopped?
Thank you.

Just a guess, but this Kia probably doesn’t have sophisticated hands free driving like a Tesla (and others) has. I could see the car “ping ponging” between the painted lines. My 2017 Volt has “lane keep assist” that is not very good, just bounces from left to right like this video shows. So to answer your question, I don’t think this car would stop or change lanes and drive around a car in front of it. The cop did what he had to do to keep the Kia from killing someone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the driver got a sobriety test right after the video ends

If the car had a collision assist system then, Yes, the police could have pulled in front and stopped and the perp’s car would have also stopped.

But not every LEO knows which cars have this feature.

I wondered why they didn’t go in front of it and gently try to stop it, but obviously the PIT maneuver worked so I guess in the end all worked out.

As one that has never dozed off behind the wheel completely but has had my eyelids get very heavy and start to nod off, I was surprised that the sirens didn’t wake him up.

I immediately suspected more than just a sleepy driver, however the way corporate America exploits workers to the ninth degree, I suppose he very well could have completely exhausted.

The driver might also be physically, emotionally and mentally drained due to a terrible marriage, lousy job, etc.

But I agree if someone’s condition is that bad, they probably should NOT be driving

My truck with the TSS (Toyota safety sense) would have at least slowed down to 25 mph if using the DRCC (dynamic radar cruse control), and at that point the emergency braking would/should have kicked in, I have had the emergency braking activate before, I was always able to hit the brakes about the same time, so I don’t know if it would stop the truck or not, I have tried to get someone to walk in front of the truck to see if it really works, but no takers so far… lol

BTW, 1st responders work shifts like that at times, it does not mean they have been drinking… Back in the early 90’s I helped out a friend (owner) as a supervisor working the Baptist convention, 2000 guest for 3 meals a day, I was in charge of set up and keeping drinks (tea and water in 55 gal food safe drums, making it and all) and other things, … I worked Thurs 10 hours (prep, and planning everything out), Friday 22 hours, Sat 23 hours, both night we had rented a room to shower and clean up, and then about 8 hours Sunday for breakfast and clean up, their was only a hand full of us that worked all shifts everyday… I lived about 16 miles away and it was a rough drive home Sunday, never drank anything other than tea, coffee and water, no drugs and no issues at home or otherwise, was just making some extra money… I fell asleep (home) early Sunday afternoon and woke up Monday night sometime… I didn’t sleep from about 1am Friday until Sunday afternoon… The guy could have been legit and just tired…

Emergency braking is standard on those, positive reviews in Iihs testing. Slowing down first then stopping. The more advanced Eyesight system in mu uncle’s 2015 Outback stopped the car when he had his stroke. Car was undamaged and driven back home. Happened on the other side of South Dakota from where they lived.

Could have been like theAunt who forgot to bring medication on a road trip and thankfully just drifted into the grass median. She got the medication and a motel room. We only knew because she called her husband telling him she’d drive home in the morning. He told her he’d be on the first train and he’s calling my mom.Last time she drove that trip alone.

A coworker and friend died 12yrs ago today when his Mazda B2000 went into a huge tree at 40k 50mph at 2am new years day. Determined it was asleep at the wheel. Not quite 22. His mom would have paid the cab fare without question. I had to tell the online comments to ■■■■ until we knew more.

In 1966 mom, dad, and I pulled an all nighter driving to DC. Mom had the wheel in the early morning and I was the co pilot. All of a sudden she veered off into the ditch. Bridge abutment ahead. I grabbed the wheel and yanked it up to the road again. The back end slid a little and the bumper took off a steel fence post but that was it. She stopped and I took over. 61 merc. Would have been a shame to smash it 1000 miles from home. It can happen very fast and don’t forget if you are riding shot gun, that doesn’t mean you can sleep.

Our 2026 Toyota has the newest Safetysense system. If I am getting close to the car in front of me, or the car ahead slows down, it would slow down way before I would. This is without cruise control, etc. Just having the front collision avoidance I guess. It has made driving even more boring for me. No shifting, no braking, I just have to steer/sometimes.

Sounds good to me, I can spend more time looking at my phone without the worry of rear-ending someone!

If it’s like the capability of my RAV4, you don’t want to test that out. I was heading out of a parking lot when another car coming into the lot toward me swerved into my lane as they made their turn. The RAV4 stopped so abruptly, I was into the seat belts hard enough to cause some pain. It was an impressive demonstration of the full braking power.

Those maneuvers only work in movies. It’s a good way to get yourself and the other person killed

Oh I have had vehicles do some stupid things in front of me that triggered the emergency braking about the same time I was about to hit the brakes and it did the same, but I still don’t know if it would 100% stop the truck, I would still like to try it…

When I was pulling that (60’ tall) tree stump the rest of the way out of the ground, after the tornadic winds hit the other house, I was getting a few feet of slack and smashing the gas, it jerked the truck hard enough that it knocked a tail light out off it’s socket… lol
The truck is a RWD, the A-LSD works great BTW…
Yeah I was being thrown forward hard…

It cost me $100 to have my stump ground up. Our brush site does not allow stumps. Seems like every year I have another tree to cut up from storm danage. Then those ten trees that I paid a dollar each for 25 years ago, cost me $3500 to take down. J like trees but I’m beginning to see the long term results of planting them. Stihl and echo rule. Just sayin.

You can put anything but pallets and paint buckets in that front yard and it will get picked up, they picked up a queen sofa sleeper once with the normal trash…
I swear you could put a body out front and the trash would pick it up…

The house we are in, next city over, wayyyy more picky about picking stuff up trash wise, but will pick up anything tree wise…

The tree/brush truck operators are fun to watch, very skilled at picking up the small and big stuff, if it fits in the jaws, it goes in the truck…

Top Gear was awesome…

We have to haul our own to the co,post site or call the tree guys. They bring a chipper in to grind all the tree limbs and last year they broke the chipper on a stump, I guess. So cut and haul the tree and pay to grind the stump. That’s fine if you ever tried to dig a stump up.

When the tornado came through in 2018, we had ten trees down at the little cemetery. A relative of one of the live folks had a grinder and volunteered. We worked all Halloween grinding up the stumps. I worked all October cutting trees up. A guy took two heaping pick up loads of round out and I still hauled 20 loads of brush in my trailer. That was after I rented a huge dumpster for the brush in the front . Big mess but I bought a new chain saw out of the deal anyway.
