I have never used and don’t see a need to grinding a stump, I just just the tree up and as low as possible and let nature do the rest… But then again, I don’t care if the neighbors like my yard or not, they are lucky (and happy lol) that it gets cut and trimmed every other week when it is growing, to each their own… Both neighbors on either side of the house in the pic have Immaculate yards, then their is ours, lol… Never been one to try to keep up with the Jones, after a hard days work on my feet and around hot cars with back breaking work, was normally to tired to care what the yard looked like, for the 1st 6 months we lived in that house, the neighbors thought my wife was a widow… My neighbor worked long hours also but at a desk job, he said he didn’t blame me that he would be the same way if he had my job, but he said after programming or whatever he did all day, he had to do physical work to burn off some energy and get his mind off of work… Other neighbor is a retired Tanker driver (Exxon)…
Some people like yard work and use it to decompress after work, me, I hate yard work and had rather be in the garage… lol
My brother is one that enjoys yard work and the only reason both yards get mowed every other week, before that, sometimes I mowed once a week and sometimes it was a month out and the grass was very high… lol
Oh boy. I have lights on the mower so if I get behind, I can mow after dark. If you want to re-plant a tree or a bush, or plant grass, you pretty much have to grind the Stu,p or pull it out. Not easy and worth the $100. As far as mowing, you get creatures in the grass if you don’t mow on a regular basis. After a vacation and the grass got a little long, I chased a snake out of the yard. Also a few mice taking up residence. They don’t all just stay in your own yard. I alway cringe a little when I see fire wood stacked up against someone’s house. Mice and snakes love it. Just sayin is all, if you are going to live in the city . . .
If you allow the snakes to remain in your yard, pretty soon they will eat all of the mice, and that is why I don’t worry about the presence of snakes. The balance of nature…
When was the last time you only paid $100 for that and what diameter (roughly) was the stump??
It took a big part of the day when my neighbor had theirs ground, at $100-$200 an hour, it can get costly real fast…My trees are all large trees…
A couple years ago on about a 30;year old pine tree that had blown down. Years ago I just rented the equipment.
Chain-sawed our dead aspen tree 29" above ground.
Screwed in a 30" round table top from a Goodwill table.
Nice little patio table with two chairs.
I don’t do anything unless I’m going to build something over where the old tree lived. My last house had some huge depressions form in the driveway. Come to find out the m oron prior owner paved over old stumps rather then removing them and compacting the soil.
I had one stump ground down years ago because the guy next door owned a landscaping company and had the equipment.
A few years back, I proactively had some absolutely huge oak trees taken down because I was afraid they would fall on the house in a storm. Big crane job with huge stumps but they were in the woods out back. They wept sap for two years and boy did they stink! Only time I contemplated grinding those down…
Yup, mother nature does a pretty good job of removing stumps, just takes a little longer… lol
Years ago we had tornado damage to a 60’ tree, snapped it about 6’5" off the ground, I removed the falling tree and left the 6’ish tall remaining trunk, a few years later I bumped it with the riding mower deck and it fell over… lol
I have ten huge stumps in back that I wish would rot away. 2-3 foot in diameter. Not my land though. On a slope and you couldn’t get equipment in there. Little fast growing sticks I planted got out of control. I thought $3000 to take the 30 plus foot trees down was a bargain.
Now in the front, maybe ten years ago I had a triple river birch taken down. The guy charged $200 for the tree and $50 to grind the stump. Saturday morning. I’ve had three different outfits and prices vary I suppose on how busy they are etc. neighbor had three maple stumps ground for $50 each.
Back to cars. I need to change oil but I’m waiting for a warmup.
Even though there is some salt residue on my car, I’m waiting until next week (when the temps will be higher) before I go to the car wash. I know from past experience that the equipment is likely to be encrusted with ice right now, and would likely cause some paint damage.
We had a large maple in the front yard of our first house, much taller and wider than the other on our court. We were not surprised when tree roots grew into our sewer drain from the house to the street. The tree was very close to it. Fortunately, all we needed to do was clear the line. Then we took the tree down. We could have waited a decade to the tree to decay, but we decided to get it ground. We turned it into a garden, and even had a lot of mulch there already.
Had our 1st out of state tree company came by today (I’m sure there will be a few more), quoted $1,700.00 just to remove the large branches from the power lines, I almost asked him if he was smoking crack…
The power company will disconnect the power from the pole for free and I have a chainsaw on-a-stick, not gonna pay that much for branches to be removed when the power company should do it for free, last year they reattached the power lines to the other house after the tornadic winds uprooted our tree for free, they don’t clean up or anything, but we can do that ourselves… No telling what they would charge for a complete clean up, I have 5 or 6 damaged trees…
But once the power is off, we should be able to clear the lines in n hour give or take a little… Then gonna put both trucks to work hauling tree parts to the side of the road…
And it’s about time to do the 6 month oil change on the truck…
First home I bought - it was only 2yrs old when I bought it. Then almost 15 years later I had this HUGE long depression in the middle of the back yard. Part of yard literally sank a couple feet. Upon inspection I discovered the builder dropped a tree and then just buried it in the back yard. That also explained why I was always mowing mushrooms over that spot. Took me over 5 yards of loam to fill that depression.
Really? Our power company does that for free here. One of my income properties I owned the power company (PSNH at the time) must have trimmed branches at least 2 times for the years we owned it. Now where I’m at all wires (electrical and cable) are underground. The electric companies will actually partially pay developers to do this. And the street I live on has a lot of trees.
From what I have read and my wifeys interpretation of what we read and after talking to the local customer service person, it sounds like they will clear the lines for free, I do know for sure they will disconnect/reconnect power to the house for safe removal of the branches, but it is not 100% clear if they will remove the branches themselves, but from talking to them they will, now they will not clean up any storm damage debris, but if/when they are trimming trees for preventive maintenance, they clean up their mess…
But yeah, that $1,700.00 is complete BS…
Our electric company does it for free because it actually saves them money. Lot cheaper to go around and clear branches that potentially will take down a powerline instead of repairing the damage after a storm.
Haha!!! Just had the 2nd tree service guy knock on the door, this time I was about to let the wife out of the garage for her appt before walking the dogs, so no time to talk, he said you have blah blah and I bit my tongue cause I really just wanted to say, well no ■■■■… Like I hadn’t seen out my own window, much less been outside with the dogs that were going off… I said I am waiting on the power company to come out and take care of it (ya know cause they have to kill the power or you will die removing the branched, he started to say something or another so at that point I snapped at him and tucked tail and left, he wasn’t so intimidating looking with my 2 Pitt Bulls and the old man which is a lean 100lbs with really big teeth trying to get to him…

I really need to put a note on the door saying Dear Tree Service People, please go away… ![]()
But they probably not read it…
On another note, the wifey made it up the mostly clear now driveway with the icey speed bump at the top of it… lol
If it’s the drop from the pole to your house, they don’t need to mess with physically disconnecting the wires to extract the branches. Relatively low voltage and they can usually use the transformer disconnect if they want to de-energize. Most of the time, they just use a bucket truck or man-lift to get close enough to cut them free. Physically disconnecting the line is a big task, there is a lot of tension on them…
I can relate to your pine tree damage. Some years back, we had a nasty ice storm for this area. Maybe 1/2". I was up all night long listening to cracking and big womps on the ground that shook the house. I thought whole trees were falling. Turned out to be branches on the big pines but dozens of them. They all looked pretty sad after that.
Using a gardehose straight nozzle at full force I was up all night washing heavy snow from our trees.
Saved our trees and a neighbor’s tree while sadly hearing others breaking.
Buth.is expected of a registered tree-hugger and Greenie.
I wish that was true here. Trees take out power frequently. Trees blown over take out water lines.
