A relative gave me a ride yesterday in her 2022 Land Rover Discovery and i was quite disappointed in this luxury ($70,000+) SUV. The upholstery and interior appointments were first class, but the vehicle rode like (to quote the late, great Tom McCahill, “the town garbage wagon”). We were on completely paved roads which were less than smooth and the ride was awfully harsh. Not at all what I’d expect from a large, heavy luxury vehicle. The road nouse was loud enough that I thought a window must be open. An Escalade is a much nicer vehicle.
Give it a few years and the dash will be rattling and having all kinds of issues… lol
I have only heard mostly bad things about them once they get some age on them and the ones I have worked on and or driven I was not impressed with either… But on the flip side, I think they will just about climb a wall… Don’t think they get stuck very easy either…
You didn’t happen to notice the wheel/tire size, did you? I bet it had very low profile tires on it.
Shouldn’t the air suspension take care of that issue?? I figured by now all LR had air ride suspensions, but I could be very wrong on that…
One new one I found has 285/40x22” tires. That’s not crazy low profile, but that wheel must be heavy.
Car and Driver said the ride quality is excellent. This makes me wonder whether the ride control was set improperly for a smooth ride on pavement, even uneven pavement. They liked the way it soaked up bumps btw.
Her lease is up end of next year. She knows this vehicle is not a long term play. She asked my opinion of the Porsche SUV. I suggested an Escalade. Her expression was the same as if I suggested she get a 1970’s Ford station wagon.
Interesting. I had no idea it had a ride control. Knowing her impatience with reading any kind of instructions, neither does she.
Unfortunately, no, it doesn’t!
Because of stuff like this…
Enormous, heavy wheels with low profile extra-load SUV tires. Huge unspring weight, very stiff tire. Air ride is nice but it can’t do miracles!
Prestige above performance or practicality.
Precisely ( if i may continue the alliteration).
The wheel size on the Cayenne depends on the trim level similar to the Discovery, Base has 20" wheels standard going up from there. Adaptive Air suspension is an option but has a reputation of giving a very comfortable ride, Both the Porsche SUv’s share a platform with Audi among others.
Suggest that she test drive an Audi Q7 and Q8. It doesn’t cost anything to test drive an Escalade and she might like it. Keep nudging her on that one.
I’m not surprised someone with a Discovery has no interest in an Escalade, those things are HUUUGE.
Sure are. I used to get a choice of rental cars when I travelled and chose a Suburban one time. It was so big that I had trouble parking it. The only other vehicle I had that large was a RAM long bed pickup. I chose it because it had a hemi.
