Key Problems

My 2012 F-250 is giving me a problem with the key. I have been having to leave the key in at all times. If I remove it there is a good possibility it won’t even start. Does nothing. The key turns and lights come on dash normal but no power gets to the starter. Does anyone have some advice. I been told I need a new key fob. It has 222k miles a runs great. 6.2 gas 4x4.

Then why haven’t you gotten a new key fob? They wear out, too, in 12 years.

Have you ever changed the key fob battery? If not, try that first, it’s a lot less expense.

Do you only have one fob? If you have both, try the other fob.
If not, does the fob still lock&unlock the doors? Then the battery is likely okay, but either way the batteries are cheap and easy to replace.
If you only have one fob, highly recommend getting a second fob and key.

That was the first think I did. The fob operates everything fine. I have a local locksmith wants me to call him when I won’t start. I have the key out and keep trying to start in everyday and it starts. It seems to only mess up when I away from home. Crazy thing.

I don’t have an other fob. I don’t mind buying one but only if it solves my problem. Would like to find someone with this problem. That’s why I’m here to save money.

Possibly the ignition switch itself has failed.

Also, there is a likely a relay in the underhood fuse box that the computer uses to trigger the starter. Those get old, too. Find it and swap it out with an identical one nearby or just buy a new one. Try that first. The ignition switch can be tested through that same socket.

Next time is screws up, try shifting to neutral and then start it. If it fires right up, your neutral safety switch is bad.

Your mechanic should have checked these before telling you to get a new fob.

I have tried to start in neutral at times when it didn’t start and it didn’t turn over there either. When this happens it don’t turn over or make a sound when you turn the key.

Recommend getting a 2nd key fob made, just as a spare if nothing else.

It may fix your problem now. And it will definitely fix your problem when you lose your only fob late one night trying to get home from work.

I’ll get a new fob and report back. Thanks to everyone for your input

Just a thought. when you pull the relay that Mustangman talked about. look in the Fusebox where that fuse was pulled from and check to see if one the metal connectors inside are not pushed down. if one is it might not make a good connection causing your no start.
