Tester made the comment a couple of years ago that if someone posted bogus info then they should be called on it and believe me, plenty of bogus info gets posted.

People with problems post here looking for an answer and they deserve a correct and honest one even if in a general sense by someone who is not a mechanic.

My comment about “you figure it out” did have a tinge of snideness to it and it was based on one thing only. The in your face attitude of a poster who has never been a mechanic, never worked the flat rate pay system, never worked in a parts department, never processed warranty claims, doesn’t understand the difference between a new and used car when it comes to dealer demos, etc, etc. and who argues the point on every one of those things even though they’re dead wrong.
I’m not the one who makes liberal use of the CAPS key. The reason for that would be to…?

Speaking of wrong again, let me add something about the prior post in which it’s stated electronic ignition works at a higher voltage. Not quite. Electronic ignition works on 12 volts just like a contact point ignition and the coil output will be the same in kilovolts if the spark plug gap is the same. If the plug gap is widened then the collapse of the magnetic field in the coil will trigger a high voltage across the spark plug tip.
Point being that if you take an engine, put it on the oscilloscope with no changes other than a contact point to HEI setup the voltage is going to be the same, both the supply voltage to the HEI unit and the voltage required to jump the plug gap.

The only thing HEI is going to have over the contact point setup is less maintenance due to point replacements and more consistency over the extremely long haul.

Oh, jt, I think my joke might have missed the mark…and yes, I do know the book!
