Hey all, was hoping for some confirmation here. My girlfriends 2013 hyundai elantra has been having an issue wafter sitting overnight it wont start next morning. Checked the battery first to see if it was a battery even though she had replaced it a year ago. It was at 12.4v, so just to be safe I tested to see if for some reason it was and alternator but when car is on battery goes to abou 14.5v. My next thought is stater as I notice finally when she tries to start it after it sitting overnight it just clicks doesnt try to crank or nothing. It is odd though because it is only after the car sits overnight. Once we start it in the morning and she goes to work it will start for her when she leaves. Any input please?
Once it starts…
How are you getting it to start? Jump? Cable wiggle?
It could be the starter.
The next time it doesn’t start, take something like a baseball bat and bang on the starter a couple times. If the engine starts, it could mean the brushes in the starter are worn, and the starter needs to be replaced.
Tester
Jumper cables.
Check for a good tight clean fit of the battery cables to the battery. If you can reach the starter connection, make sure it is tight and clean.
Have the battery checked. Many places that sell batteries will test yours for free. Even though the voltage sounds ok, the cranking amps may be low.
If that 12.4 V is in the morning, then not likely a parasitic drain. If it checks low first thing, something electrical is draining the battery overnight.
First thing that comes to mind is the fuel pump, or possibly a clogged fuel filter.
Has the fuel filter ever been changed? It may not have a replaceable filter, I know. I’d also have a mechanic check the fuel pressure.
Clicking means the starter motor is not operating either due to the starter, cables, or battery. Nothing to do with fuel.
Ah, I missed that. Thank you. Just trying to suggest another alternative with the fuel.
There is a recall for your vehicle that may be your problem. It can leave your brake lights on intermittently which can drain your battery.
