Is it worth owning a collectible car, even if you don't plan to drive it often?

The Kansas City Mecum auction had a 1989 Dodge Aries with 56000 miles that really looked nice .

It did not meet the reserve ( what ever that was ) and the high bid was 3000.00 .

An “Investment” is something that is expected to return a regular profit. A 5% CD, Government Bond, a Dividend Stock .

A “Speculation” is something that doesn’t return any regular return, instead relying on future appreciation. “I payed $1 in the hopes that a bigger fool will pay $2”.

To buy any asset with the expectation of gain, that doesn’t pay a predictable return, whether it’s art, pottery, Pet Rocks or cars, is a Speculative Investment, a Gamble.

Frankly, if you’re thinking of buying an Aries with the expectation of gain, I think you’d be better putting the money on black or red at the roulette table. .

He has bought the Aries . At 300.00 he can actually make money if he wants to .

If you lose all your money at the roulette table, you won’t be able to enjoy the car.

It was on The TV Show “Home Improvement” when Tim Allen as Time the Tim the Toolman Taylor takes his TV sons to a sport memorabilia store so they can invest their money in some sports memorabilia as an investment. They find a radio control race car of a real race car that is autographed by the Real Driver and Tim asks the owner about it as an investment and he responds that it has already gone up XXX dollars (I do not remember how much
) but what the owner is referring to is how much he paid for it and what he will sell it to the boys for
Tim thinks that the car is a good investment so they buy it

As it turn out, the boys cannot leave the “investment” R/C Car alone and take it out back and race it down the road and it get run over by a garbage truck

I think this same ploy is used by Stuart (comic book store owner) on Leonard and Sheldon when buying a replica Sword and maybe some retro Star Trek paraphernalia

As long as this thread is going in that direction

At an estate sale there was a Red Rider BB gun tagged at $35, I pointed out, brand new at any store they were $29, response from the seller, “but it is collectible “.
