I turn the key, battery guage drops to zero, only get a buzzing sound. Crawled under car while wife tried (after 41 years I figured she already had plenty of opportunities to rid herself of me). The buzzing sound was much louder and seemed to travel through the undercarriage.
After 4 tries by me and 4 by my wife the car started. It seems to happen only after the car has been parked for a while and does not do it all the time.

How old is the starter? What year Chevy? Can you test to see if electrical power is getting to the starter when you turn the key?
