Lots of fighting, some posters are highly opinionated. That’s life, in my opinion no need to constantly fight about it. I too comeback with replies, hopefully without being too rude.
Watch the last ‘Downton Abbey’ movie. One character had a good line, was something like this: “ Yes I will listen to your opinions, when I ask for them”. May not be the actual line, but the message is the same.
Some of us are nearly ready to leave, partially because one particular individual insists on “educating” us and saying in no uncertain terms HE is the only one doing things correctly
Actually, that description fits at least two (sometimes three) forum members. I’ve been a member for ~20 years, but I may be departing… soon.
Now that Car Talk has been off the air for what, ten years or more? There are few new people coming to the site. With the spam attack, cross over from car complaints have disappeared. I hope everybody stays around.
We have lost a lot of folks over the years. I liked reading replies posted by HonaBlackbird, he’s long gone. For the most part we know who are the mechanics, engineers, and people like me that are neither. I no longer do any maintenance on my vehicle other than wiper blades and air filters. To change headlight bulbs on my truck requires removal of the headlight housing from the truck. Headlights were glazed over, so I killed two birds, removed the assemblies and took them to the bodyshop to be polished. Then reassembled with new bulbs. The truck is 13 YO and had the original bulbs! That was in November, have yet to try driving at night.
In Florida, Dec-Feb is nice weather, so the truck finally got done with a cleaner wax, I can’t remember when it was last waxed but came up great. Car does get better treatment, it got a couple of waxings since Nov. How long I’ll be keeping up with that I don’t know.
Guys,
This is the internet. Chill out! You’re going to run into lots of different kind of folks, and some of them are going to rub you the wrong way. Get used to it!
Afterall, it’s just a bunch of marks on a computer screen.
Like I said earlier, I think some of us are seriously considering simply leaving because of lack of traffic . . . and because certain individual(s} have completely socially unacceptable behavior, yet seem to be receiving a free pass or accommodation of sorts. I may be wrong about that last part, but all signs point to it, imo
I try to avoid confrontation. I come here to have fun, not argue. Differing opinions are fine as long as they are handled respectfully, like you do, @db4690. I don’t mute anyone. Instead, I skip over replies from people that normally post stuff I’m not interested in. I also skip unusually long posts. One thing that would help is if posters would use emojis to show sarcasm or another emotional meaning for the post.

One forum member seems to think that he’s being paid-by-the-word.
And I spent my whole business career trying to be precise and concise only to find out CarTalk pays to be verbose.
My favorite ‘quote’ (turns out Lincoln didn’t say it after writing a long letter), something to the effect of “I’m sorry this letter is so long, I didn’t have enough time to make it short.”
Much of my career success resulted from me being clear and concise.
60 minutes per hour ![]()
I find that’s true. When I was getting my master’ degree, I found that if I wrote a paper at the end of the semester, it could be quite long. If I start3d much earlier, I could edit it and cut the length in half or more. They had less repetition and netter explanations.
I don’t understand why people think that everyone needs to agree with them or they’ll leave and go home. A couple people here are very insulting and violent but I ignore them. Others simply think their opinions are the best and it’s their job to police the place as a charter member. Time to loosen up a little. I’ve been here as long as anyone and watch people get ganged up on and chased away. I miss mean eyed Joe for example.
I’m sorry… ![]()
That famous quote, “I am sorry this letter is so long I did not have time to rewrite it,” is widely attributed to Mark Twain, but it was first ascribed the French mathematician Blaise Pascal.
The quote emphasizes that brevity and clarity in writing often takes more time and effort than writing a long, meandering text.
For which I plead guilty. ![]()
Trust me… I wasn’t referring to you.
Yeah that was a prime exercise for the little snow flakes in journalism class. We’d have to take the long articles we wrote and cut out all the stuff that was redundant. I can still see him telling us that nobody cares what we think and stick to the 5 w’s. Strangely missing from AP and the currant crop of journalists. In my opinion anyway, but take a typical news article and take all the junk out and you have a couple paragraphs. That’s why I can read the local paper in about ten minutes depending on the obits.
I check those first, got to see if I’m listed😀
The infighting and the rambling posts do create a very high and annoying “fat/content ratio” on this forum.
I stay here because there are many contributors whose posts I enjoy reading and learning from. I value their input. They’ve either worked in the automotive field, or have expertise in related areas.
They know who they are.
I enjoy reading your posts and comments ![]()
