Idle Air Control Valve for Peugeot 405 1.9 SRi – Compatibility Help Needed

Hi everyone,

I have a Peugeot 405 1.9 SRi and I’m having issues with the idle air control valve (IAC valve). Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find the exact same part in the market.

I’ve attached a photo of the current valve from my car. I’m also including a photo of another similar-looking valve – could this one be compatible?

Any help would be appreciated. If you know a compatible part from another model (Peugeot, Citroën, or others), or an aftermarket solution, please let me know.

We have several very knowledgeable mechanics who frequent this forum, but Peugeots (and other French marques) haven’t been marketed in The USA for many decades, so it is doubtful that anyone here has the direct knowledge that you need.

What model year is your car? The 405 SRi 1.9 could be almost 40 years old if you are in Europe. If you aren’t in Europe, it could be almost new.

That type of IAC is not common in the states. Ours usually screw into the throttle body. Seems like this one is a simple bypass valve. If you can connect the bypass hoses, I think it might be made to work. I notice the “new” one has 2 electrical terminals? Does your Peugeot IAC have only 2 terminals?

I think these work by sending voltage pulses to the terminals to screw the valve in or out to open and close the air passage. That would mean to close, the one terminal getting positive voltage is not the same as getting positive voltage to open. The polarity will switch depending on the need for more air or less air. If both valves originally came from the same supplier and each have only 2 terminals (and even better, the same connector design) it may work.

Assuming the new(er) one is functionally identical and has the same electrical connector, I’d be tempted to use it, with a self-fabricated bracket, rather than scouring the ends of the earth for a part which may no longer be obtainable from any manufacturer

Does this car have to undergo a smog inspection?

If so, hopefully the inspector won’t fail it because of an incorrect part

1st off, when asking for help sometimes it helps if we know what year the vehicle is… lol

Being a Peugeot, what country are you in??

I have seen an IAC that looked like that on a Euro many years ago, maybe BMW but don’t remember the details, I do remember that it had a very high idle (stuck open) and it was either not available (no googling back then) or it was stupid expensive, so we simply beat a piece of wood in it and started small and drilled a hole in the center of the wood stepping up in size a little at a time until we got a good idle speed, was it perfect? no, did it work? Heck yeah it did… Sometimes ya gotta do whatcha gotta do… Now a days, there are probably better materials to use than wood…

Anyway, give us the year and we will try to locate one…

Might want to find a Peugeot forum, we’ll try to help, but they’re not sold here.

The idle air control valve in your second picture is the same as the replacement IAC shown in the parts catalog for Peugeot and other European cars.

Maybe later today more people will announce that we are not required to work on foreign cars.
