I just noticed my parking brake doesnt stop the car from rolling

what could be the issue behind this? i put car on drive with parking brake on without me stepping on gas and it still rolls forward?? is this a major safety issue?

Is this on the 2010 Mazda and is it a 3I or 6I or???

Broken cable… stretched cable… out of adjustment parking brake shoes.

If this is an automatic, ignore it. If this is a manual, you might wanna fix it!

It’s an automatic according to his description…

+1 for Mustangman, not that hard to find (most of the time)…

I my opinion it is a minor safety issue. When my state had mandatory safety inspections, they did require the emergency/parking brake to hold the vehicle under load.
Likely a simple fix, the items covered by Mustangman. Though as with anything automotive, could be less than a hundred dollars to several hundred.

Newer cars with elec shifters put trans in park and apply e-brake? Or leave trans in neutral and apply e-brake? How did checkov die when his car crushed him? Did he leave it in neutral? I know it reversed and he was behind car on unlevel ground.

Bad shifter design where you think its in park but it may not be. Foot operated parking brake on thatt era Jeep.

Take it to a mechanic. The rear brakes may need to be adjusted.

I wouldn’t call it a safety issue, certainly nothing to panic about.

What sort of parking brake design does this car use? cable actuated drum/shoes, cable actuated disc & pads, electric parking brake?

9 out of 10 parking brake complaints are due to insufficient force: pull the handle up two more clicks and the rear wheels will lock.

reporting back to confirm this was the case. i yanked it all the way back and it holds the car while on neutral even on a downhill slope. thank you all for the input this site helps a lot of joes like me.
