Here's a weird one for Kia/Hyundai owners

In areas that have been experiencing extreme heat, the gas tank on some Kia K5 and Hyundai Sonata models has expanded to such an extent that the floor panel has become deformed, the tank comes into direct contact with the exhaust pipe, and the back seat is displaced. The manufacturer admits that the affected cars are no longer safe to drive.

I bought a new 2004 KIA Optima and had it until 2014. So I am really disappointed with the KIA/Hyundai situation as of late.

There’s too much complexity in the evap emissions systems perhaps.

I checked at NHTSA and there were 3 complaints for the 2022 K5. I’m sure that there are more complaints registered for the other years listed. There’s gonna be a recall. Hyundai can do it now or wait for NHTSA to demand it.

On a recent Best of Car Talk podcast the caller told Ray and Tom they had opened the fuel cap to refill their car, and a ball of fire emerged from the hole, setting the caller’s hair on fire. Cars are inherently dangerous.

I make it a habit of not smoking a stogie when removing the gas cap.

The driver wasn’t smoking anything. Ray speculated the ignition was caused by a static shock of some kind.

Should be called Least Worst of CahTalk.

Did 1960’s nylon tires (if that is what they were) cause static buildup in cars?
They came in different colors, I recall.

Have not.iced any ground-draging static straps on fuel tankers in years.
Are new tire compounds more electrically conductive?

Hair on fire, says it all. When filling the gas can for my mower, I always make sure to ground the nozzle against the plastic gas can. Can’t be too careful.

Hmm. Pretty sure you’re pulling our legs here.
