When one needs basic transportation and the car constantly is in the shop for repairs, all the other cool factors (looks, nameplate, handling) pales. If repairs are frequent then gas mileage becomes a secondary issue (even from a pure financial standpoint). So as other have suggested get a car that would meet your needs and is as new and reliable as you can afford.
