Yes In the early days I resorted to a screwdriver through the filter, but back then the oil filters were sturdier I think, the chisel method I have used on jars, but if I were stuck like that now I would try a strip of folded over sandpaper or whatever that perforated mesh @the_same_mountainbike with an e finally, I remember those, never had one. Edit @VOLVO_V70 wins the captain obvious of the day award, an 8 year old thread OMG
Iāve had pretty good luck with these. Theyāre truly massive, and youād better have the new filter on hand, because it WILL crush a hole in the old filter, if you have room to get a bite
Just changed oil and filter tonight. I use the socket type that fits on the base of the filter. I have several sizes and I too have tried various ones but the sockets grip well and seem to do better in confined spaces. I did use the screwdriver once 40 some years ago and it worked after the strap wrench just bent the heck out of it.
I bought this as my 1st filter wrench 25 years ago. Iām still using it because I never get around to buying a different one. It works but it sometimes crushes or rips the filter. It doesnāt work well in confined space, which most are in. I really need to get one of the other ones shown above.
When everything else failed a strap wrench always worked
when dealing with a difficult spin on oil filter
I have a homebrew gadget I made for this sort of situation, sort of like the strap version above, only the strap is a section of bicycle chain. Itās a tool you can buy too at bicycle repair stores, the main purpose is for removing screw on cogs from bicycle wheel rear hubs. I think plumbers use a tool of that sort too.
