As an alternate idea. My wife has a 1991 Geo Tracker and about 4 years ago was making a similar noise. Then the speedometer quit working and the noise stopped. She spent the next year driving it estimating speed by RPMs. We decided a working odometer might be important to schedule servicing and replaced the dashboard.
