Gasoline and fuel

I put the wrong gas in car and now it is running bad.

Make/model/year/miles/engine?

What’s the ‘right’ gas? What did you put in?

It calls for unleaded and I put diesel fuel

Yep drain the tank and put gas in it. If it were a diesel and put gas in it, there would be expensive repairs. How did you get the fat green nozzle into the narrow unleaded hole anyway?

One thing I have noticed in travels in other states is that some stations seem to be using green covered nozzles for gas and you really need to look hard at a strange station.

Don’t run the engine until the diesel fuel is removed from the tank. Tow the vehicle to your shop, and have them drain and refill the tank w/fresh gasoline

Good question. I’ve had a couple friends make that same mistake here in Calif , so I’m curious how it could happen. My googling shows that it might not be a strict requirement that gas stations make the diesel nozzle larger than a gasoline nozzle. Apparently some stations use the same size nozzle on their pumps for both gasoline and diesel dispensing.

Too late for that:

Have it towed to your local mechanics. They’ll drain out the entire system and probably run some kind of injector cleaner through it to make sure they clear the diesel out of the injectors before filling it back up with unleaded.

I’m not sure what kind of damage you would expect on a gas engine running diesel (kerosene). I would expect maybe the cat might be a problem but other than that, I would think once you get good gas through the system, it shouldn’t be a problem except maybe some fouled plugs.

Now with gas in a diesel, the lack of lubrication can cause problems with the injector pump and injectors.

@Ashley_Spaulding Curious minds really want to know how you did this and how much diesel you put in the tank.
