Like Elon Musk or hate him, his companies are doing some incredible things.
The linked video below is the introduction of the new Tesla Roadster. Given all the things they will tell you and SHOW you about the car, notice what they don’t tell you… They do not say is is an EV. We all assume that because it is a Tesla but the presenters see no need to actually tell you (unless, of course, I missed it!), I don’t know if we NEED this… but some buyers will WANT this!
That’s amazing. It’ll never be register from road driving as currently configured. If those thrusters always produce fog they will obscure the vision of following drivers. If they disable the thrusters for normal driving it could be registered. Still, using the thrusters and the proximity system would be a fun way to park. Oh, and it’s not a roadster, it’s a coupe. (Picky, picky).
Finally, a car that will fly over the Snake River. Evel Knievel will be smiling on that day.
Makes for a neat show, but the only practical thing I saw was a way to get around those two semi’s going side by side on the interstate that you can’t get around.
I put this in the category of “things we can technically do but have no actual market demand”.
Engineers going off the hook. The primary reason we have a business case review before launching any technical development where I work. People have lots of great ideas but what is the ROI on that investment? Some marketing value to the company but how many people are going to pay for such features with extremely limited (generous) applications beyond insane acceleration?
Or crazy features that most people should never even try?? Like the flying (hopping) feature?
0 to 60 in 1 second would be fun to try a couple of times but after that? Eh, not much use.
And then we have the “sucker car” feature. Sure Gordon Murray’s T50 does that to some degree, but modern tires on a sports car FAR exceed what normal humans reach on public roads. Even me. On track, I doubt more would have the gonadal (invented word to beat the censor-bot) fortitude to explore. These innovations that guys like Jim Hall introduced got banned pretty quickly due to the volume of dust and sand blown out the back onto trailing cars.
If Tesla charges more than $2M for the car, there will be a number of people that buy one, or even two and park them in a large garage.
If I had unlimited funds (will never happen lol) I would buy one, it would be a blast to take it to Airstrip Attack (standing mile) tracks, even the B’ville salt flats, as well as the Dragons Tail and or Pikes Peak type places… With the suction feature, I bet Pikes Peak would be a blast… Purpose built race cars can cost close to if not much more than this Tesla project thing…
I do think that even though it may not have much use for us Earthlings, its technology could have some practical use for future vehicles on the Moon and or Mars…
Being it only takes 44 feet to go 0-60 in 1 sec, I’d be doing it all the time… I love accelerating fast off the line or from a slow roll in a fast vehicle…
