It’s not worth trying to figure out. They take a lot of abuse and someone banging it in the parking lot could create stresses that eventually cause it to shatter. You can buy just the glass or the whole mirror. I have ordered the glass but it was just a little off to fit. They make nice inspection mirrors though.
Replacement mirror glass for your car is available from Autozone for around $20. Probably other places. In a similar situation we bought mirror glass similar enough to work frim a salvage yard. But that was 20yrs or more ago.
Welcome to the forum…
I don’t think any of these “exploding mirror” post have a confirmed reason for what happened, my guess a kid using a pellet gun got a lucky shoot in… Best thing to do is to just repair it and move on in life, it will probably be a mystery that even Scooby Doo and the gang will never solve…
That thought came to my mind, also. Many years ago, a co-worker was driving on the Garden State Parkway, at night, when one of his passenger side wheels was hit by a small-caliber bullet while he was driving.
He heard a gunshot, and when he had a chance to park, he saw the unmistakable evidence of a bullet impact on the wheel. There wasn’t any actual damage, but the fresh indentation on the wheel was unmistakable.
He was lucky that the shot hit the wheel, rather than the tire.
