EVAP Pressure Sensor

Hey, I have a 97 Ford Escort with roughly 150k miles. Just recently got a new Timing belt and regular oil changes. My engine light came on and got that checked with code P1443. After looking around and what I’ve experienced I think it may be the purge canister, vacuum line to it, or a sensor. Can these be easily checked to single out the problem? And how easy would it be to clean/replace the problem?

The home mechanic doesn’t have the tools, or test equipment, to check the EVAP SYS “by the book” (service manual); but, all is not lost. Do a Web search for: escort P1443. There are several hits. Here’s one: http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl717f.htm
As suggested, replace the gas cap; use carb cleaner in the ports of the evap control valves; use the Haynes, Chilton’s, alldata.com, repair manual. If all fail, take it to a mechanic.

Do you have an idea of estimated cost if I took it to a mechanic?

Could be any of these:

P1443 - Very Small Or No Purge Flow Condition A fuel tank pressure change greater than a minus (-) 7 inches of H 2 O in 30 seconds has occurred with purge (fuel vapor) flow less than 0.02 pounds per minute. Blocked fuel vapor hose between EVAP canister purge valve and FTP sensor.
Blocked fuel vapor hose between EVAP canister purge valve and engine intake manifold.
Blocked vacuum hose between EVAP canister purge valve-solenoid and engine intake manifold.
EVAP canister purge valve stuck closed (mechanically).
Check for blockages between the fuel tank, EVAP canister purge valve and engine intake manifold. Check obstructions in the EVAP canister purge valve diaphragm and ports.
