engine is smoking but not overheating
Car, mileage, what color is the smoke, present all the time, etc. might help in making a guess.

I am guessing you mean that the smoke is coming from the engine compartment not the tail pipe. Smoke from the engine compartment usually means there is an oil leak that is getting onto an exhaust component. It will probably be leaking somewhere high – like valve cover, oil filler cap, PVC fitting, ventilation fitting, etc. Oil leaks onto hot engine parts can be a fire hazard so get this looked at.
