I recently backed up into a high curb and hit my exhaust pipe. I was backing up slowly but the impact was enough to make my engine light turn on. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Not until you have an idea what DTC was set . Get the code and let us know, not what the auto parts store kid tells you, the actual code (ie P1234 or what ever it is).

Look and see if your tailpipe is bent or clogged. It is possible reduced exhaust flow is setting off a code.
A DTC is a Diagnostic Trouble Code. In most states a chain type auto parts store such as AutoZone, O’Reillys, etc will at least provide a code number. They should not be expected to provide a diagnosis; only a number for the car owner.
In some states (California and Hawaii) I don’t think the parts stores are allowed to do this free service by law.
