Driving prevention = kill switches?

Well I think two things, probable cause and the bars pay a lot of taxes. It would be very bad for business to have the police parked out front. At least in a small town. And a guy driving 20 in a 30 is not probable cause to stop. I think unless totally polluted, the guy swerving all over the road is a myth. My opinion without evidence.

If we are talking about the same comments, evidence provided had nothing to do with cars and is known to start arguments. So yeah, I removed that.

Get this, in some States a drunk rider of a bicycle can get a DUI that will count as prior DUIs and result in driver’s license suspension! If you do the right thing and ride a bicycle instead of driving because you’re drunk they’ll still take away your driver’s license. What an example of totally backward thinking!

You are forgetting that more than 1/3 of pedestrians killed by cars were drunk. Some places have laws against public intoxication.

Biking in my state is very dangerous. Drunk biking would be worse!

Folks riding bicycles shouldn’t be riding intoxicated. The only serious injury I’ve sustained when riding a bicycle was when another bicyclist on the wrong side of the trail ran into me. Not alcohol related in that case, but I definitely don’t want to be riding my bike on the same road as intoxicated cyclists.

I’ve made some comments here about vehicle driver/bicyclists problems. May have left the impression I think vehicle drivers are the worst offenders. Actually other bicyclists are by far the worst offenders on the road. Very common to see them ride right through red lights, stop signs, etc. Just the other day I was riding through the “top end” of a t-intersection, where another stop sign controlled road meets the “t”. Two bicyclists buddy-riding clearly see me coming, fail to even slow for the stop sign, turn, and ride directly into my path, forcing me to swerve to not hit them. They act like I’m not even there.

You would rather have drunks drive cars and trucks instead of bicycles?

If the penalty of getting caught under the influence driving a car or riding a bicycle is the same, then there is no incentive to not drive the car.

Uuhhhmmm, Are you forgetting the bus, Taxis, Uber, Lyft, call a sober buddy???

Add to that riding a horse, lawn mower, and even an easy chair. We’ve been over this all before. You can even be sleeping in your car and be cited if the keys are in it or if you have access to the keys. Anyone under the influence of drugs can be a danger whether they are walking or whatever but this is over broad application of a driving offense. Just becouse someone is walking in the middie of the road drunk doesn’t mean it should be a driving violation. But it is an emotinal issue not a rational ones and judges are not challenged.

You also can lose your CDL on a snow mobile trail no where near a road if you are cited.

Forget it not worth it

How about cell phones? That seems to be a real problem as well. I literally had someone stop in the middle of the road to use their cell phone so I had to drive around them. This is just as big of a problem as drinking.

As for trading freedom for safety, that never ends well. We just got to hear how one of the “alphabet” agencies that somewhat controlled our lives over the past 2-3 years admit they were largely wrong. Targeting drunk driving is one way to get people to accept this as an OK idea. What about the next time the government wants to lock us down? Simply send a remote signal to the car and it won’t start or only have a limited area it can travel. The less government in our lives, the better.

I was driving in a rental car on a Los Angeles freeway at the posted speed limit when a motorcycle patrolman pulled alongside and told me to get moving as I was holding up traffic.

That is funny. I was driving in a new location yesterday and was trying to do the speed limit but was getting passed. I started doing 10 over and still was getting passed like crazy on curvy roads with hills.

What lane were you in? If you did comply and start speeding, then the officer gains the legal basis to pull you over or give you a ticket!

Cali is one of those States where they have the move over for emergency vehicles law. Or possibly slow down too, but nobody does that. So the cops usually bring the whole highway down to one lane going 20 MPH when they pull someone over. Then they accuse you of holding up traffic. What hypocracy.

I believe they’re deliberely trying to create traffic jams by encouraging this kind of driving where people speed and follow too closely. Some groups make more money with increased inefficiency I guess.

I was actually in California and I witnessed a group of 20 cars create their own traffic jam. It was on this highway where it goes down a long straight hill and I could see about a mile ahead. A group of about 20 cars passed us all driving as fast as they could and following too closely. Way up ahead one of the cars in the group changed lanes and slowed down a little. This caused a chain reaction where each car slowed down more than the one in front, until the last cars actually came to a complete stop in both lanes of the highway. When we caught up to them we were actualy coming up behind cars that were stopped in the highway and had just started moving again a few seconds prior. It was amazing to see how only a small group of not more than 30 badly driven cars can bring an entire highway to a stand still.

Courts in many jurisdictions have ruled that actions like that are entrapment and thus, illegal.

I’ve been to a few of those. One coming up Sunday. You would think they have to be nuts or drunk to drive in one but they do have pretty strict rules to follow. No head ons no hitting drivers door, gotta make a hit within so many seconds etc and follow the flags. Still thought you would need to be on a public road. Maybe one of those no jury would convict things.

County and state fairs can be very interesting for people watching. You are almost guaranteed to see people very drunk, a fight, and or someone getting arrested. Anything is possible.

This year the sheriff fad to break up a fight of about 100 people over a stolen tip jar. First time in my memory anything like that happened at our county fair.

5 or 6, don’t remember. Next day, driving on the same freeway in the other direction, I looked to the lane to the right and saw a driver staring at me. He pulled a few feet ahead and tossed several eggs onto my windshield.

Plus he claimed he was under the limit. Case was eleven years ago, I wonder about the result of him fighting the DUI.
