Door won't shut when it's cold

In really cold weather, the back hatch on my Volvo Cross Country station wagon often won’t latch until I slam it shut several times; once it warms up, sitting in the sun, it works fine. Why?

Likely the grease on the lock (the part that holds the door shut, not the part the key goes in) is a little dirty and thick from the cold. Clean up the latch parts and re-lube then with the proper lube and it should be fine.

Thanks! I will try that!..translate: I will have my husband try that…so it may be a little while before I can let you know if it worked ;o).

Could also be some moisture in the latch mechanism. WD-40 may help with that.
