Hello. My name is Jason and I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with an automatic transmission. It has trouble shifting. I have to drop it down from D into 2 and then back into D to get it to shift out of second gear most of the time. If I have to stop ten times in a trip I have to manually shift it about seven or eight of those times. On top of that, sometimes while I’m driving it will slip into Neutral but it’ll still be in the D position. This just started and has only happened a few times so far. My transmission fluid levels are fine. I’m trying to see if there is any other solution besides rebuilding or replacing my transmission. Any help would be appreciated.
Jason,
Sounds like you have a rebuild in your future. I learned during my last rebuild that there are good shops and bad shops and they both can have the same nationally recognized brand name out front. Upon talking to my regular mom & pop shop that I trust for anything I can’t (or don’t want to) do myself, I found that while they don’t fix transmissions, they can work with one of the chains on my behalf to ensure I don’t end up paying for the transmission equivalent of a muffler bearing. So my advice is to work through a shop you trust or at a minimum check out the better business bureau on a few shops before picking the one closest to home. Aside from number of complaints, check how many were left unresolved.
Good Luck!
That’s what I was afraid of. Thanks for your help. There goes my tax refund.
