Dad borrowed our neighbors 60’s Dodge truck to get a load of gravel years ago, neighbor had no idea the front end was so loose until dad told him how it drove. Ended up doing a full front end replacement along with new floors shortly after.
For insurance purposes most companies ask who is sharing your residence and rate accordingly. So my wife, who would never drive a stick shift is automatically figured into my premium UNLESS I specifically elect an exclusion to the policy, which means that I have NO COVERAGE if she get’s into an accident.
Otherwise, if you allow another driver to operate your car, any claim will be automatically be charged to YOUR policy, including any excess that may be charged to YOU.

I said above that a friend of mine currently has my '02 Envoy because his work van broke down. Last year he also borrowed it for a while. Oddly, on his way home with it, it started misfiring like crazy. He figured it out and replaced the offending ignition coil, and then another soon after. He also bought a 3rd (with the 2nd) coil just to have in the car for the next time. It’s still there. (If I’d have had it, I would have just done all 6 …) He also changed the oil/filter.
This time, he was making one last run before returning it. It seems that either the water pump bearings went south, or the fan clutch. (I haven’t seen it and don’t have pics, but the fan is all out of whack and hitting the shroud). He’s going to fix it/have it fixed and return it. I told him I’d pay, but he’s like “no, no. You let me use it…”
From now on I’m going to lend it to him like once every 6 mos, so that when something breaks it’s when he has it and he fixes it for me as a “thank you.” (Other than basic maintenance I’ve only had to replace the battery).
And it was a very long time ago since I needed to borrow a car from a friend. But I brought it back with a full tank of gas, a fresh oil change, and a good cleaning.
Some people are OK to lend to.
Very nice story.
I experienced the opposite, which is why I don’t lend my car which I mainly drive anymore.
My brother came up for a visit some years ago and I loaned him my car so he wouldn’t need to pay for rental for the month he stayed.
On the island, the cars back there have small engines and low HP. So when he stepped foot in my car, it felt like a Bugatti to him.
He decided to not only speed with my car but also drift and burnout,
I know my cars very well ( in and out ) and I know my automatic transmission would have never went out of the blues like that, right after he returned the car to me.
I also loaned my car to a friend once and I was riding in the passenger seat when it seemed as though he would drive over every potholes in NYC.
Amazing what people can get used to. Had a neighbor 2 broken tie rods hanging down, I mentioned it to him and he says it is ok as long as I don’t go over 35mph.
No!!! We are talking about loaning out your personal vehicles to a friend or relative or neighbor for free, no charge, not commercial car sharing, as in rentals…
I really think James is Spamming. He keeps jumping around the site and posts basically the same stuff about the vehicle sharing and a brand of remote start.
+1
That person’s posts are a poorly-veiled attempt to promote that particular brand of remote start systems.
Plus, if you read any of the post it is clear, all the post are about loaning out your personal vehicle, not your business’s rental car… I delt with Car Sharing with ERAC and the government and I am pretty sure that James Brow is smart enough to know the difference…
I was curious about the remote thingy cause evidently no matter how many times I have tried and had multiple different people try it, I can’t get my Tacoma to remotely start… So the remote system was a little helpful and now I know it is a car sharing thing and hardware has to be installed to use it…
But yeah, seems like every post the remote start and or rental company is mentioned…
Years ago I let my brother borrow my car, supposedly just for two or three days. It had a full tank of gas and was meticulously clean.
Almost two weeks later he finally returned it, gas tank pegged on empty, filthy inside and out, full of trash on the floor despite the over-the-hump trash container, and enough miles driven that I had to spend for an oil change several months early. And his attitude was the worst part. I’ve never loaned him anything since.
I personally think leaving trash in someone’s car is more offensive than returning it with an empty tank
Yes. I agree.
I only share my car with my g/f. Even then, it is very seldom, she is scared it will get away from her.
