How are you doing with the storm? The national news made it look particularly bad in Minnesota.
It’s 70 degrees in here. We only got about 5 inches because of the dry air coming in from Arizona I guess. But the wind is high, about 2 degrees outside, and that’s why most of the roads are listed as slippery. So we didn’t go very far yesterday and today. Now in Duluth, 200 miles north, I’m not sure how much they got but the plow drivers are on strike. Thanks guys.
Thanks for asking.
Bing, cup holders would have been beneficial when cruising from Porkys to Porkys on Lake Street.
My dad and his brothers made malt liquor in a 5 gallon milk can back during prohibition and lowered it into a well to cool it and then drug it out and strapped it in their Model T and used wiper motor hose to sip it out. That was the roaring twenties on a cotton farm in Mississippi.
That sounds bad! Remembering my grandmother living in ST. Paul, and the funds ran out in Feb for plowing and salting, she said it was hell, maybe in the 80’s
My great grandfather got into racing boats, thinking they were making trips to canada!
I’ve read about those fast boats to Canada. At night with no lights.
I’m not anti strike. Never been on one myself but can sympathize depending. Still I’ve been through a few and it actually was a good opportunity to find out exactly what was going on, how many man hours were really needed, develop short cuts, re-prioritize the stuff that really needs to get done and so on. Ya gotta pick your fights though. I think the fight in Duluth is how much sick leave is paid out at retirement. 25% is pretty standard. Should be 100% in my book since otherwise you are punishing people for not using it. Still I don’t don’t they’ll crack that egg much and Spring will be here before ya know it.
I don’t consider cup holders a defining feature in a car, but I admit I’d miss them if they weren’t there.
Also, if my cup didn’t fit in my cup holder, I’d buy a travel cup that fits, rather than choose a vehicle that fits my cup.
The reality is that I only need one cup holder per person, because, if I’m going to drink that much liquid, I’m going to need to make frequent restroom stops. That gives me plenty of opportunities to refill my cup from a thermos while I’m stopped or pull a fresh beverage out of the cooler.
I suppose I might need multiple cup holders that can hold large beverages if I was driving across the country wearing adult diapers to make good time like former NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak, but I doubt I’ll ever do that.
Cup holders serve many purposes for me. They hold beverages and so much more. I have 3 in the center console. One has a beverage most of the time. The other two have items I regularly want to access. Coins, mints, a bluetooth adapter for connecting my phone to the radio (no aux input), phone rest, etc etc etc. They are convenient place to keep all kinds of things readily available besides cups or drinks…
I never gave it much thought until I started using it. I go to Dunkin Donuts everyday to get 2 coffees. I used to get a tray so that they wouldn’t spill when I put them in the passenger seat but they occasionally would. Finally I used the holders any they work beautifully. Just looking at the holders might not do you much when you go to buy a car but I certainly wouldn’t buy a car without them.
See, I’m odd. My cars are empty when I leave them. I keep coins and gum (instead of mints) in my pocket. I leave a phone charger hooked up…but that’s about all I leave. My wife, on the other hand, makes great use out of her cup holders. Nail file, pens, napkins, receipts from 2015…always carries an insulated cup of water in a Yeti type thing, but rarely finishes it. Half of it gets thrown out when I clean and vacuum the car, though. I’m sort of anal about leaving stuff in the car. I guess if we crash in the desert she’ll survive longer.
If she rides in your truck, doesn’t she bring all that stuff with her?
We’ve worn out cup holder discussions but that brought up a new issue-litter baskets! No one provides litter baskets in their cars that I know of. In 1974, it was about a $40 option for my Olds which I declined in favor of the $5 variety. But those went over the hump in the center. With bucket seats now there is no hump and no place to put a litter basket. Sure the door pockets are one place but from the money they saved by eliminating ash trays and lighters, couldn’t they reinvest it into a $2 litter basket?
To hold a liter of wine?
For only two bucks, I think that a 1/2 liter basket is the most that one could expect.
The Yeti, yes. And she leaves behind some gum wrappers, etc. The loose change and old receipts stay in her car. I drive an old Buick to work (most days) and drive the truck on the weekends. The Yeti will not fit in the Buick’s cup holders lol. They’re non adjustable, 12 oz can variety. But I don’t use cup holders for storage, myself, and I’d drink all the water if I brought it. If not, why bother bringing it in the first place? That’s just me, not saying it’s right. May be the reason I wouldn’t place a lot of emphasis on a cup holder review. I’m sort of a minimalist.
Yeah well so much for spell check. As long as it’s word, it doesn’t care. Like to, two, too.
Didn’t (or doesn’t) MN require litter bags?
I guess you missed my comment about cruising Lake Street to Porky’s.
No I got it. They had good malts. Minnesota has a littering law but nothing says you can’t throw it on your floor or cup holder. But not littering is really a cultural thing and doesn’t seem to be a big problem. There are those jerks that throw their McDonald bags on the road, but doesn’t take long and someone else picks them up. I told the story about Detroit before so I’ll refrain.
Porky’s was on University. It’s now condos, which I’m still mad about even though end-stage Porky’s had become a hangout for dweebuses in Hondas with fake go-fast parts and no actual go-fast parts.
Though there’s still Wagner’s Drive In in Brooklyn Park, and the Wagniters car club hangs out there once a week in the summer, so there’s still a place to go for burgers and car culture. Though sadly that one’s probably not gonna be around much longer - Jim Wagner has stage 4 cancer and has already had to cut back hours. Which is not only a shame because of the car loss, but because Jim is a pretty awesome guy who’s done a lot for people over the years.
