Dexron III + Friction Modifier = T-IV Transmission fluid?

“at first sign of trouble i will flush it out…”

At the first sign of cancer you’ll stop smoking?

"at first sign of trouble i will flush it out.."

At the first sign of cancer you’ll stop smoking?

I never understood that logic (or lack there of).

As I suspected, it’s futile. You’re either too stubborn to listen or incapable of comprehending. Perhaps you just enjoy trolling, it doesn’t matter. My only hope is people who stumble upon this thread who may be thinking about doing something similar can see it’s actually stealing and shows low moral character to keep something and not want to pay for it.

Look it doesn't matter what I do with the fluid, if the shop put in the wrong fluid, they put in the wrong fluid - whether I leave them in their a day, a month, a year, it's irrelavent if they were at fault to begin with. If they didn't provide the service I paid for, I have a right to dispute the charge

UMM…that’s very naive if you think you’ll EASILY be able to recoop any money if there’s damage to your tranny. Good Luck though.

Michael, you have no proof that the fluid they put in doesn;t satisfy the manufacturer’s specs. Even if it doesn’t you’ve suffered no damages. Your “right” is to be “made whole”. Legally that means compensation for damages. You have no damages.

If you leave the fluid in and 30,000 miles from now the tranny dies, you are not going to be able to recoup. We’re simply suggesting that you’ll be less likely to have a future tranny failure if you put the known correct fluid in. None of us knows if the fluid will cause damage, we just think it’s wise to “hedge your bet”. You have to do what’s right for you.

Can we close this thread? I do not see this back and forth argument going anywhere.

Anybody else reading these posts, can have their take home message/whatever it might be,

Just wanted to add an FYI that original Toyota Type T-IV or Aisin brand T-IV which are specifically made for Aisin trans and is not synthetic. Some say Mobil 3309 is compatible but its synthetic so when the Aisin trans gets a certain temp, the gears won’t seem to grab as well if you have Mobil in it. Aisin trans are not only in Toyotas but certain Volvos and Saabs too. If your manual says Type T-IV thats what you need. Its very expensive from the dealership. Like $15 a quart. You can get a better price by the case on ebay or amazon. I got a case of 12 OEM toyota brand for $75. Better to be safe than sorry.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for reviving a 7 year thread with no real conclusion and now 68 posts.

Get that Dexron out of there ASAP and fill with the proper fluid. And please, don’t go to a quick lube place unless you have an urgent need to use the john.

That Dexron may have been in the vehicle for 7 years now .

Amazing. It was under “new posts”

I suspect Mike is not coming back to tell us he didn’t get his money back, and he bought a new $6000 transmission.

Just in case someone stumbles on this discussion, I’ll just make a few observations. The “bob’s the oil guy” link, did not have any comments by Bob that I saw. They were comments from just folks that commented, like here. What I did notice on the comments though were the wiggle words like “should”, “probably”, etc. In other words just guessing.

I have sympathy for the parts folks that have to stock all these different fluids but really how complex is it to just buy Honda, Toyota, etc. fluid from the dealer? They stock the right stuff and prices are usually not that far off. Takes all the guess work out of it. Also I believe Mikey said his car took 3309 fluid and not Type T-IV or whatever it is. So I’m not understanding AMP81’s comment.

I have the fluid changed every 30K at the dealer on my Acura. Even at $15 a quart (which I have no idea what they charged), $150 to protect a $6000 + transmission is peanuts.

Oh yeah, and my experience with dealing with the CC companies is they don’t know anything about cars and will just simply side with their business client unless there was an obvious fraud or abuse. Small claims judges aren’t any better. Talk Dexron III, type T-IV, 3309, additives, and you might as well be talking Chinese. As it seems to me anyway. I’ll be happy to send a refund if I’m wrong.

Discussions don’t get archived, so please don’t blame the poster. Happy new year.

It’s not a matter of archiving. It has to do with the fact that this site doesn’t list threads in the Suggested Topics in reverse chronicle order like every other forum I’ve ever been on or written. So it seems like the 7yo thread is a newer thread. A good suggestion is in the Suggested Topics section should show the date someone last contributed to that thread.

If it came up under “new,” then it wasn’t under suggested topics at the bottom of a discussion. When I filter by New, I don’t get old topics.

If the new poster found the topic to add a comment, then it would show up like any new comment, and it’s still not worth rapping anybody’s knuckles for doing so.

When I use the site and am on community.cartalk.com, I get infinite scroll and don’t see any suggested topics. When I’m on an individual discussion page, suggested topics come up at the bottom. If this is different on a desktop, please let me know.

I suspect they’re googling their question and the thread is coming up. As such, we really need to put a stop to the “thanks for reviving an old thread” routine. They don’t even realize it’s an old thread, and if the first interaction they have with us is being smacked down, they aren’t coming back.

Do we want to never see old threads again? Then let’s keep giving new users grief, because when people stop visiting due to the hostility, the forum will shut down and we will get our wish.

That’s correct…and that’s where I see older posts. If in somewhat reverse chronicle order the older posts shouldn’t show up.

FWIW, I’d imagine most non vehicle specific shops use Dex III plus a friction modifier (like Lubegard black, for example) rather than buy or stock multiple ATF’s for multiple vehicles. Whether someone is comfortable with that or had rather have the OEM branded fluid is up to them. But you’d better clarify on the front end. If you ask for a trans fluid flush at somewhere other than the dealer, it’s probably best to clarify.

t-iva is $6qt at dealer. unless you are a putz who pays 15 on ebay

Heh heh, or Amazon. I don’t remember the specific items but gotta watch yourself on Amazon too. Seems to me what was supposed to be around $20 was $75.
