Deodorizing car

I haven’t smoked in my Honda Civic EX '01, but over the years, it just has started to smell less than fresh. What is the best way to remove the odor? My wife suggests sprinkling the carpet and set fabric with baking soda, but I fear that that might create a huge mess.

I purchased an upholstery cleaner called a “Little Green Machine” made by Bissell. You can find them at discount stores and home supply stores for about $100. It heats up a solution of water and you squeeze a trigger to squirt the solution into the seat fabric and carpet. It then sucks most of the solution back up. I’ve cleaned upholstery in my house and the seats and carpet inside my cars. It seems to work effectively at cleaning and removing odors.
