'21 crv hybrid 84k miles. Wife was on her way to the dealer for an oil change when it started losing power and lots of warning lights came on. She was on a bridge so she couldnt stop immediately. By the time she got off the bridge everything cleared up. She called the dealer and they told her to have it towed in. When they got it in it has a blown head gasket. Seems to be somewhat common.
My question is, does anyone here know if honda has solved the issue with better gaskets or heads? She wants to trade it in once its fixed but we dont want to go thru this again. And does the 1.5T still have oil diloution problems like they used to?
I don’t blame her but why would you want another Honda if you are concerned you might have the same problem. If I had a XXXXX Brand that had a major problem in four years I am changing brands.
Tell me another brand that doesn’t have any models without major problems anymore. I was hoping maybe honda saw what was failing and used a better gasket or whatever was wrong. I have more faith in honda than other brands based on past experiences.
Toyota rav 4 is a possibility but theres not many around right now. Looks like theyre getting ready to bring out an updated model by years end. I like the mazda cx 50, but we have 1 dealer within 100 miles.
You bought the first model year of the 2021 CRV hybrid from Honda.
You never buy the first model year vehicle from any manufacturer.
Because, you’re the guinea pig.

According to carcomplaints.com no one complained about your head gasket issue. This includes data from NHTSA.gov. If you really want a Honda, I wouldn’t worry about it.
I know your trust issue, though. We bought a new 1996 Ford Windstar. During 2001 and 2002 it developed clogged EGR ports. The dealer’s ultimate solution was to replace the intake manifold. I asked why that would stop the carbon from clogging the ports. They just stared at me. I decided to sell the van in 2003, and wouldn’t buy another Windstar. I just didn’t trust Ford anymore. We bought an Oldsmobile Silhouette and we were very happy with it until we donated it in 2019.
I’ve had three Hondas since 2005 and was happy with all of them. We had such good success that two daughters bought Hondas based on our success.
I wasnt aware that they just started the hybrid in 2021. I learned the first year problem lesson way back in 1982 with a trans am. Then in 89 with a lumina. Then in 04 with a colorado. I guess i really didnt learn much did I?
A google search shows bad gaskets on some 2023 models.
2021? Is it paid for? Heard 1.5 turbo motors are weak. Like gm 1.5 turbo also.
Paid for. 1.5 motors are weak as in not enough power or weak as in prone to breaking? Im not a fan of small engines making power thru a turbo so im already skeptical. Call me old fashioned but thats how i feel. My wife tends to like her acceleration. She might be pretty rough on a low hp car.
The same engine is used in the 2014 - 2022 Accord hybrid. There are complaints for leaking head gaskets for the Accord hybrid engine.
I suggest that you give Honda of America’s customer service folks a call, and that you express your incredible disappointment with what you thought to be a very reliable automotive marque.
Don’t say that you’ll never buy another Honda, and–instead–just tell them in a completely civil manner about your disappointment. Ask them if it is possible to receive some Goodwill Assistance with the repair cost, so that you can buy your next Honda in good faith.
Follow up your phone call with a letter, referencing the phone call and reiterating your intense disappointment. With any luck, you might get reimbursed for a portion of the repair costs.

Your friend drove only 300 miles in 3 years?
Why does he own a car?
