Crunching sound when braking

94 mercury Tracer, 40,000 miles. When I slowly brake to a stop, there’s a scrunching sound, (klunk, klunk, klunk, similar to the sound on those submarine movies when water is trying to get in, before the structure collapse).

The sound seems comes from passenger front side wheel and the passenger side floor vibrates/pulsate along w/ each klunk.

Any ideas?

thx

More info:

the crunching sound does not show up when I slam on the brakes, only there when I slowing brake.

You don’t put a lot of miles on your car, do you?

I want to say you have a warped brake rotor, but I can’t think of a good reason why you would have one, and if you did, I think you’d feel it in the brake pedal, not just in the passenger floorboard.

Have you had this problem looked at by a mechanic?
