We’ve inherited my dad’s 1987 Volvo 740 sedan. The car has a rebuilt transmission, over 150,000 miles on it, no air bags, runs like a dream and rides like a tank. Our kids are currently 12 and 8 and we’re thinking of keeping the car for them to drive when they get old enough. In any case we’re very likely going to turn it into an art car. Would appreciate anyone’s thoughts.
The car is already 21 years old. It will be 25 by the time your older child is ready to drive. If you plan to keep driving it until then and it is still in good condition, sure, keep it. If you are planning on storing it until then, fugedaboudit!
I agree. OK car if it lasts. But, unless you keep driving it and maintaining it, it will dry-rot, and be useless in a couple of years.
We plan to drive it 15-20 miles or so, at least once a week. Will that be enough?
That sounds OK if you keep it maintained.
