Cold weather and overdrive

I generally drive around 50 until van warms up enough to engage overdrive, this ticks the wife. She pushes van to 65 almost right away engine is taching at about 3200 rpm. Would this cause damage when it is cold out?

Yes.

What is wrong with the overdrive? It should engage regardless of temperature…Maybe time for a Transmission Service…

In most vehicles the temp has to reach a certain temp before the overdrive will come on. Mine doesn’t take long, however.

On modern vehicles the overdrive won’t engage until the coolant temperature has reached a certain point. This is so the engine turns at higher RPM’s when cold to cause it to warm up faster, thereby reducing emissions.
