Cold clicking

Why does my Toyota Sienna ('03) click/ping until the engine warms up after a cold start and driving about a mile?

It only does this after first cold start of the day. Later in the day on a cold start, there’s no clicking engine noise.

The sound is like pinging you might hear when lugging a hot engine. It doesn’t click until the revs are around 3000rpm and the transmission hasn’t upshifted from 2nd gear.
