Classic GMC pickup truck hit by train - in forest

Almost every episode started with Ponch and Jon chasing someone, then a crash happens, the car being chased gets away.
Show was known for bloopers.

It reminds me of one of my favorite minimum information Car Talk Puzzlers. IIRC the way it goes is two hikers decide to take a chance on a shortcut through a train tunnel. At 40% of the way through they hear a train approaching fast, from behind. One runs toward the train, the other runs the other way, toward the end of the tunnel, both run at 15 mph. Both just barely make it out each side, before being hit. How fast is the train moving?

Seems to me the one running TOWARD the train deserves a Darwin award :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Just to clarify, did they both get hit or did they make without getting hit? My English teacher wife wants to know. The speed of the train is unimportant except to engineers… then we don’t know the speed of the runners either. In my experience some run faster than others.

They both run the same speed, 15 mph. The motivation for one deciding to run toward the train is b/c there’s less distance to that end of the tunnel , further distance to cover to run to the other end. Both runner barely make it, they reach their respective ends of the tunnel at the exact time the train reaches the same places. The train obviously reaches the near end first, and the far end later of course. The puzzle is to figure out the train’s speed without knowing the length of the tunnel. .

Ray’s hint; There’s a complicated way involving numerous equations, and a very easy way.

Unrealistic. No two are going to run at the same speed. Whenever I’ve been in that situation the question is whether to keep on running or to slow down for the sake of the slower kid.

Slow down? This is America, every man for himself! … lol …

I’ve run down railroad tracks before. Sometimes though laughing so hard, tough to hit full speed. Then again we were still faster than that old man chasing us.

This is true.

If you are running you need to run faster. :from say bear or lion you need to run faster.than the other kid. :grinning:

We do know the speed of the boys.

It’s just simple math

Both boys run at same speed 15 mph

Boy 1 exits tunnel just in the nick of time

Boy 1 ran 40% of tunnel, meaning Boy 2 ran 40% of tunnel, reaching 80% at time train enters tunnel

Boy 2 has 20% to go, train has 100% to go

Boy 2 exits tunnel just in the nick of time

Meaning train is going 5 times faster than boy 2

Boy runs 15 mph so train must be going ?

75 mph?

The shorter runner made it out covering 40% of the length. So the longer runner made it 40% the other way before the train entered the tunnel. The longer runner has to cover the remaining 20% of the tunnel before the train completes the entire length.

15 / .2 = X / 1
75 = X

? If I’m right, where’s my ceegar, if not nevermind :grinning: ?

If being chased by a zombie, a gator, cocaine bear, or whatever, I just have to run faster than you.

I have it on good authority that zombies and cocaine bears don’t stop chasing after they get the first one. Works good with gators though…so better be aware of your surroundings :grinning: p.s. don’t hide in the shed with the chainsaws and other sharp implements…
