Fairly sure the covers went on after the folks took a road trip through Arizona and new Mexico in that car in the early 70s. The back seat vinyl wasn’t torn or damaged even after 18yrs of family use.
We had them on the 78 rabbit almost immediately. We kept the 70 510 wagon from new in late 69 to when it was monetarily totaled in a minor accident in 1991. Mom’s first car and the family wagon.

At any rate point was decisions are made seemingly for safety but then years later the results end up with an entirely different safety issue. Should we be careful enacting new safety procedures? Try and think of the ultimate end it may bring? Back off a little? I dunno but it might be better to loosen up a little.
The average annual auto collision death rate for children under 5 years of age is 20, just in the state of Minnesota, compared to 38 nationwide for hyperthermia.
Does this mean vehicle safety measures for children is ineffective? Would there be fewer casualties if the children were in the front seat?
I believe the death rate would be much higher without modern safety practices.
Sheepskin seat covers? I have never seen those. When I bought a new truck in 84 I immediately put on “horse blanket “ seat covers. When I got rid of it, removed those seat covers, original seats looked like new. Since then I have not bothered with seat covers.
Back in the mid-late '70s, a friend loaned me his Celica when my Volvo was in the shop. While that little Toyota was pleasant to drive, I really disliked the feel of the sheepskin cover that he had put on the front seat.
It should be added that he chose to take the dying dogs to a veterinarian in Delaware. While Salem County, NJ is near the tollbridge to Delaware, I think it could be reasonably argued that this took more time than it would have taken to drive them to a similar facility in his own county.
Just total, gross incompetence, all around!
Just read the article, he parked the k9 unit with the dogs inside instead of using available indoor kennels that are available for officers at that building. Didn’t check on them to offer water. The ac in the patrol vehicle was in need of repairs as well, there us a system that would lower the windows ti get ventilation but it wasn’t activated even though it was found to be working.
Just a sad situation all around that could have been avoided.
