How much endplay is acceptable in a manual trans counter shaft?

My 2008 Colorado has more than 0.125" counter shaft endplay, and makes a terrible racket when shifting. The dealer says “No problem. If it fails, we’ll fix it.” Hasn’t something failed already?

They know that the Colorado was built without undue money or care, so the end play seems like nothing to them. I guess that is why the terrible racket seems like “your problem” to them. If something is failing, it’s the bearing. The racket means something like “the bearing is almost gone”. When it goes, it could destroy some other expensive stuff along with it.
