I think that is a pretty good argument. The manufacturers likely had to design it as an “opt out” to comply rather than as an “opt in” as some of those devices do.
Easy enough to unplug it if the car has to go to an emission check.

What messes with some/most/all of those interrupters is, if you turn the vehicle to accessory mode 1st and wait like 10 seconds or more before starting it, it then puts the plug n play thingy in the factory mode and you have to reset it to the way you want it… lol
No I don’t. But if I did I wouldn’t worry about it being stolen off my truck any more than I would worry about someone taking the hitch out of the receiver.
Select “Tow/Haul” on the shift lever or mode control switch, stop/start is disabled in tow mode.
The trailer light tester I saw was for a four pin rather than seven pin and was quite small, did not look at it closely. I have a light that goes into the receiver when hitch is not in use, that might work the same.
As far as the tow/haul mode, just for kicks I have tried that, changes the shift points to higher RPM. I have never had a trailer load heavy enough to use that feature.
Mine, and I think Bing had one, was a ‘59 Catalina. Probably had more fun in that car than any other car I ever owned. That was when I was a junior in high school.
Very true, don’t hear about to many receivers being stolen either, but most truck owners that would ever need one already has one, but I bet a same priced DVOM just sitting on your rear bumper would be a different story, besides, you don’t have to stop, bend over/squat down/lay down to grab a plug hanging out the bumper (most in or above) while just walking by like you do with a receiver…
Just thinking out loud here, as I am only assuming that the SS system gets it’s reference to engage (along with VSS etc input) the SS feature from the brake lamp switch when the brakes are applied, that being said, it would take quite a bit of resistance difference to alert the ECM that a trailer is being pulled to disengage the SS system automatically while towing a trailer, so would a simple LED test plug be enough to alert the ECM to disengage the SS system automatically…
Now with a 7 pin, it could get a signal from the brake controller signaling the SS to disengage automatically…
If and only if it is possible for the SS system to disengage automatically while towing, then this is just my theory, not proof…
I must have 5 or 6 drawbars and b alls. Have you priced one of those lately? The last one I bought is class III and has a 6" drop w/stainless ball - cha-ching!
I never leave a drawbar and ball assembly in the receiver without it being locked. I never drive around with it in unless I’m towing- it hurts to walk into it by accident ![]()
And when I am towing something- I don’t want to stop somewhere mid-tow and come back to find my entire rig gone. If you don’t lock the drawbar into the receiver, someone can easily disconnect the chains and pull the drawbar out and slide it into their receiver and off they go. Same at the boat ramp, don’t wan to come back to find my trailer gone…
Yep, and it also makes a long pickup even longer, they seem to like to park on the end spot in parking garages, watch out or crunch!
^^^^^^^ This…
The worst one was when I walked around the back of a Ford Taurus, my shin shock that car side to side enough other people saw it move… I removed it and though it in the trunk… Wow that one hurt!!!
I bought a basic 2" ball and drawbar and paid about $50.00 for it last year… I have a couple and one is either somewhere in my truck or in the shop, the other one stays with the old Chevy… My son leaves it in the hitch, whenever I get close to it, I pull it out and toss it in the truck somewhere… He may not like his shins, but I sure do…
Those just aren’t the same as keys.
This woman lost hers in a parking lot. It was likely driven over.
You’re a professional.
I saw someone driving with their windshield covered with snow and ice in Albuquerque a few weeks ago. It’s pretty easy to clean windshields here.
Me, too, but I did leave a gas cap behind in Missouri once. Now I have one with a tether.
