Carbon Fiber Parts/Accidents

Im a bit of a hypochondriac so when I say im little worried, please note that its an understatement and im hoping to get some mental clarity by people who may know a bit more about the topic than I do. A few years ago I installed a Carbon fiber front lip on my car. I took it to the dealership for my annual service and one of the service guys rammed my car into a cement parking block, essentially destroying only the underneath of the carbon fiber front lip. Not visible unless you look from underneath the car. Since it was not visible, i decided to not replace it and keep the money. since then, a year has gone by and recently i have developed some consistent irritation with my throat. I am worried that somehow, the carbon fiber particles are making its way to the inside of the car, whether via the A/C or what ever other method possible. This is bothering me to the point that I may sell the car that I love very much. Please do not roast me as im already struggling with this issue. DO i have any cause for concern here?

It seems possible the frayed carbon is getting into the passenger compartment and irritating your respiratory system. Does your car have a passenger compartment air filter? If so you might try temporarily removing &looking at it to see if there’s any unusual looking fibers trapped.

Is there a way to rid your car of this frayed carbon piece? If so, you could try removing it entirely. Also suggest to google to determine if particles from carbon fiber construction are a common cause respiratory symptoms.

Another idea: Try wearing a mask when you drive. Does it help? I see lone-drivers wearing their masks inside their car most every day. Maybe they know something.

btw, I’m just a knucklhead diy’er with no carbon fiber/respiratory symptoms related experience.

No you don’t.

It’s not psychosematic; it may be all in your head. In fairness to you, the location was already suggested, so my diagnosis is correct. There are a lot of things that seem to be impossible but there are various scenarios which could make it possible.
If you handle broken carbon fiber pieces, wear rubber gloves because it can irritate your hands when the pieces poke into you.
I don’t believe the carbon fiber is being inhaled.

The particles would be entering other cars also, your hvac air inlet is not near the bottom of the front bumper. Are others dying?

Your front spoiler is probably made of plastic or fiberglass with a layer of carbon fiber decor, which materials are you allergic to? You might enjoy better front road clearance without the spoiler.

This fear is not real. The irritation is not from carbon fiber.

You’re absolutely correct, you are “a bit of a hypochondriac”. :smile:but a quick coat of epoxy to the damaged area will encapsulate any exposed fibers and will prevent the shedding of any fibers.

But in your own best interests I suggest you also stay away from any grilled foods, any non-organic foods, any alcohol, “fast women” and anything that has any relationship to fun. :rofl:and you’ll probably live to be 100 and spend your last 30 years regretting it.

Does your car have a cabin air filter? If so, have you been changing it on schedule?

That is the best advise you could get, remove it and then you don’t have to worry about it anymore… The point here is not if it is hurting you or not, your mind is telling you that it is so in your mind it is hurting you, remove it from your mind/vehicle and worry about something else… If it remains on the vehicle, it will always haunt you no matter what…

My Grandmother (RIP) was a hypochondriac… It is amazing what your mind can trick you into thinking…

Sorry to hear you are going through this and welcome to the forum…

Removing the air dam could have at least two negative benefits. First, the air dam might help provide down force, keeping the car on the road. Second, it may redirect air into the engine compartment for cooling purposes. It would be useful to determine what the air dam is used for before removing it. Odds are it provides a useful function. Maybe we could help figure this out if @samhodjat_192324 would tell what he drives.

I drive a 2023 Supra

Hi, Yes ive changed it twice in the past year or so. Free services from Toyota

Nice car.

The air inlet through the cabin air filter is the only way for air to enter from the front of the car. Don’t sweat the damage from an air quality standpoint. The particles can’t get past the cabin air filter.

I give Toyota a + 1 for that! Good on them.

Simple solution, remove the aftermarket front lip and reinstall the OEM part. Or if installed over the OEM splitter, just remove it.

Actually you do have reason to be concerned, especially if the broken lip is still on the car and if the carbon fiber lip actually has any carbon fiber in it and not just a carbon fiber appearance.

The air that the lip directs up into the engine compartment exits just behind the hood at the base of the windshield. This is where the outside air comes into the interior of the car through the cabin air filter.

The problem is that if the lip has true carbon fibers in it, the filter will NOT stop them. They are way too small. They are not as bad as asbestos because they don’t get lodged in the lungs the same way, but they do irritate the lungs and with constant exposure, they can do the same damage.

I appreciate the feedback. If that were actually the case, do you think I would also be experiencing itchy skin/eyes etc? Because I havent had any of that.

Thanks! i appreciate that

Are you telling us that the engine heat is discharged into the cowl for the air conditioner to ingest?
