Car won't start

The car sputters, but won’t crank or turn over. The doors and windows still work. It starts with a jump.

Your post is most confusing. Starts with a jump indicates a bad battery or primary circuit connections.

Sorry. I was posting for a friend who wasn’t too clear in her description. We discovered the starter has a bad spot. So sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn’t.

Crank and turn over both mean the same thing, that is the starter turning the engine over with the normal cranking speed. Starting or firing up means the engine cranks and the runs on it’s own.
