hello I have a 2004 Mustang GT AUTO 4.6L V8 and over this week ive been trying to get some work done on it so I can take it to see family please help me
So I just replaced the U-Joints and rear main seal in said car and when I put the driveshaft back in I mistakenly put it back wrong like I didnt slot it in how I marked it took it when I rolled through the gears there was a loud grinding noise coming from the slip yoke transmission side in neutral it was fine but changing from drive to reverse or park there would be a grinding noise
So I took it out and let my mom start it while I was under it and let her put it in reverse I had her shut it off immediately as the grinding noise was still there as it went into and out of Park
TL DR: car makes grinding noise going in and out of reverse drive and going into park after replacing rear main seal and U-Joints Makes the noise regardless of the drive shaft being in or out
(I do know that the rear transmission mount needs to be replaced by previous owner but when looking at it as it shifted gears there was any shaking I could notice)
Dimwitted Diy’er here, but I’ll chime in anyway. Hopefully can be of help. I do own a Ford truck and have removed the driveshaft a few times.
So you didn’t place witness marks before removing driveshaft? hmmm … you may have to try fitting it again testing all four combos one by one. Presuming one-piece driveshaft w/no slip joint.
Another idea if you have a carrier bearing, might try adjusting it.
yes I will put it back in and align it when I greased the slip yoke I couldnt see the notch I do now I just have to wait before I can do it in my hubris I changed out the diff gasket and cover and I have to wait 24 hours before I can put fluid in it
I wouldn’t call that “hubris”, just moving forward the best you can. You remind me that’s it is time for that job for my truck. Probably will wait for better weather. Best of luck w/your experimentation.
1: If the rear wheels are off the ground, switch the traction control “Off”.
2: If the driveshaft is removed or the rear wheels are in motion, the parking pawl will grind when shifting to park. When operating in drive or reverse with the vehicle off the ground or driveshaft removed, switch the engine off before shifting to park.
+1 for Nevada, if the transmission output shaft is still turning when you put it in park it will grind, same thing as putting it in park while still moving, it will grind, and yes with the driveshaft out of the car it will spin/rotate even in neutral, and since you can not stop it by hitting the brakes with no driveshaft installed, when the engine is running, it will grind, turning the engine off and waiting a few seconds allows the output shaft/driveshaft/wheels to stop turning before putting it in park…
