I have recently purchased a new Maverick with a capless gas filler pipe. The pipe has some plastic fingers that get pushed out of the way when the filler hose is inserted. I am curious what people have experienced with these systems. They don’t seem to be a true seal. Are these systems any better than the old-fashioned gas cap?
Not a new thing and there is nothing to worry about.
No, removing and installing a gas cap is good exercise for your arthritic hands.
Had one of those for 15 years on my MKZ, no problems. If you park outside, check that debris doesn’t collect in the filler area.
We have a 2013 Ford and a 2018 Cadillac with capless fillers. Never a problem and there’s no gas cap to leave loose and cause a check engine light.
Our 2019 Odyssey has one and Mrs JT parks in the garage. There is no odor and we always close the garage doors.
We have this setup on a 2020 Honda Pilot.
It’s given us no problems whatsoever.
This is where the “me too” button would be helpful.
2013 truck and 2020 car. Truck is nearing 80K miles, no problems, car @33K, no problems.

I have a capless filler on my Tahoe. I don’t like it strictly on principle. What about the dust and dirt? Does no one have issues with that if they go offroad.
I actually can’t stand it. I get very frustrated about it when I fill up. Just give me a cap please.
My 2017 Vette has one. No issues and never heard of any vette owners having issues either.
Then junk it. Get a proper off-road vehicle, like an AMC CJ5.
Why not just put proper gas caps on vehicles?
You are not going to use a CJ5 as a work truck on a filthy muddy job site. You will use a pickup and you will contaminate your fuel with the filthy dust on the flapper.
For the superior seating and cargo capacity.

I doubt I ever recommended driving a classic station wagon for off-roading. If I had a 55-57 Pontiac Safari, I wouldn’t even drive it on a dirt road.
For pure off-roading I have always preferred AMC CJ Jeeps, The 60&70K5 Blazers were great. Of course now that the new Bronco is available, that has many benefits over the old school 4X4s.

Gas capless systems utilize spring-loaded internal flaps and integrated rubber O-rings that seal mechanically with identical pressure every single time the pump nozzle is removed…
The majority of drivers do not drive around all day in mud and dirt, so overall it is better for the average consumer to not have a gas cap…
I have never had a gas cap go bad or a CEL about a gas cap, but I also Only turn it till I hear 1 click, I have watched and heard so many people crank down on their gas caps damaging the seal or gas cap… Remember the average person doesn’t know how to check their own oil or tire pressure, why would knowing how to properly install their own gas caps be any different???
