Can the transmission be damaged such that SUV could only reverse?

She was properly stopped, then bumped from behind and pushed forward onto the track.
With the way clear, ahead, why not drive forward 100 feet, park at the curb and exchange information with the errant driver after the train passed?

Yes.
Even though mee-mool lights (o)T(o) are extremely reliable and fail safe, I always look and listen. (Although at Quiet Zones train horns are not sounded unless needed.)

Since she was heading toward a perfectly clear area just ahead, I do not understand why she backed.
