The river episode should be a way to get the perp off the streets if cwatkin can prove that creep was near him. IMO asking someone on shore where he landed could act as a witness. I think most people would be willing to do that.
Frankly I regard this as complte policical BS
1.When have anyone among us has experienced a Park Service , regularly patrolled by Rangers, such a thing?
2. In the very unlikely event that such has happened, it called Collision Insurance
3. In the unlikely case that it involves some already convicted of another crime, itâs simple. Call the Police/Sheriff. Justice ainât perfect but it does have a way of convincing âthose who see their error in their waysâ
Iâm Vietnam Era, Pro Gun, but I think that any other alternative than allowing the Police/Sherrif to handle the situation is foolish.

The US has significantly lower crime rates than many other countries too, and crime has been decreasing for several years. BTW, I looked up crime rates in NYC. Whether crime is up there is a matter of your time frame. It is generally higher than it was the some years in the 20-teens but significantly lower than the 1990s, even after crime increased in some boroughs while decreasing in others.
+1
A friend of mine retired to his native country of Trinidad & Tobago because he thought that it would be much safer than if he had remained in NY. In reality, the violent crime rate in that tropical paradise is many times higher than in NY, and I fear for his safety in T&T.
I am going to file for an order of protection. Even if it is only a piece of paper, I feel that this is additional documentation and a paper trail of this problem. If I do have to take action and defend myself, it wonât be like this issue wasnât known. It would help my case. I have two witnesses who were with me on day I was followed on the river. I am going to contact the court where the probation was issued as well.
I already have cameras at my residence. I live out in the woods on a 1/3 mile driveway with a gate at the top so that would show intent to do harm if he went to the effort to bypass this.
I would rather not have it obvious that cameras are monitoring my truck. As much as it would stink to be stranded out in the woods, I think this situation needs to be handled at a legal level and put him away once and for all as he is a menance.
Keep in mind that many of the locations I go and park are really out in the woods, down rough roads, and with NO CELL PHONE SIGNAL at all. The NPS Rangers suggested I buy a satellite communications device. I an looking into something like the Garmin InReach or similar. The nice thing is that you can buy more limited plans and turn the service on/off at will by the month when you donât think you would need it. It stinks to have to spend money on this but it could be useful in other emergency situations, not just this. Yes, the police could be HOURS away so being armed is definitely something I need to do. I guess I could carry bear spray which would be dual purpose as well since bear have really started to populate these areas over the last decade.
The NPS Rangers have been less than impressive and professional from mine and othersâ experiences. They will stop you for a rolling stop and harass you, stop you for driving through the campground at 5 mph to go from your campsite to the shower house, among other relatively harmless nonsense but donât seem to handle actual real crimes all that well. It seems they like to throw their power around with a god complex to make you sweat. They will do searches and toss the contents of your car out on the ground, no matter if snowing or raining, then expect you to pick it all up when they find nothing. In my case I had documented threats that were submitted to them and it appears they did nothing. I have the guyâs name, age, address, phone number, etc. and gave all that to them so it would have been easy.
This all started over the stupidest of things. Due to a change in weather on a trip, I suggested moving to a different river to avoid a potentially dangerous flood situation. Several of his friends heard both plans and most picked my idea over his so this dented his pride or something. Then he did some rather nasty things to another friend of mine and I called him out. Then it seemed like game on for him.
I was just about to suggest this exact thing. If something bad did happen and you related the past events, it would probably be asked why you hadnât asked for one. More documentation is better and this does have teeth if you get him on camera violating it.
Get the order for protection and contact the court. If your witnesses corroborate your story then the perp might be back in jail anyway. That wonât last forever and having a restraining order now means you will have it when get gets out again.
Not necessarily. Getting a Temporary Restraining Order isnât that difficult if one can show cause, but getting a Permanent Restraining Order can be somewhat difficult.
