Broken boots on front axles

My mechanic told me that my boots are broken in the front axles and that I will need to change both front axles for $795 because you cannot tell when the boots where broken and don’t know if the joints are still good and it could make the car stop or make one/both of the wheels seize up while driving.

$795 sounds kind of pricey. I would get a second opinion.

Most people don’t replace the boots. It is often easier and cheaper just to replace the CV axles than replace the boots.

Thank you. I will get a second opinion on this.

For reference, we just had both front axles replaced on an '05 Ford Escape due to bad ABS rings. Cost about $470.
