Break Problems

I have a 2001 Kia Sportage that has been giving me a world of trouble. It’s not really conceivable for me to purchase another car right now, so I have to keep paying the mechanic bill. Newest problem: the breaks either stutter, like they’re not fully engaging, when I’m breaking OR they SLAM when i lightly tap the break. Mind you, like many car problems, they don’t do this ALL the time - but at least once everytime I drive the car.

What could the problem be?

Do you have a break problem or a brake problem?

Brake problem, typo.

It doesn’t really matter what the problem is. We’re talking about the BRAKES, which are rather important. If they don’t work properly you need to take the car to a mechanic and have him or her repair the brakes so they work as designed. This is not a monetary issue, it’s a safety issue.

This needs to be looked at by a mechanic. It could be many things. I would start with checking the operation of the parking brake to see if the cable might be catching. Then I would inspect the pads/shoes and rotors/drums. Remove the pads and inspect them. Check the level and condition of your brake fluid. If you don’t find anything, get the master cylinder and other brake system components checked by a professional.
