I had my 2012 VW Golf 2.5L serviced today and the inspection report mentions some seepage at the brake vacuum pump that they referred to as “level 1” and said I could just monitor it for now.
To fix they said would involve resealing and the quote they provided was $872.59
Does this seem reasonable? Is it safe to hold off on getting this addressed?
I feel like this place might overcharge given past experiences.
I’ve replaced several VW vacuum pumps for oil leaks. Your leak appears minor now but will gradually worsen and start to leave spots on your driveway. The price quoted seems quite reasonable.
Yeah I looked at a Youtube video showing the replacement process and it seemed quite involved, so I guess the quote wasn’t too bad.
This same shop quoted $1200 to replace the two rear shocks, which to me seemed very high.
That does seem higher than I’d expect too. I’d be guessing maybe 2 hours labor and $350 in parts, so arouond $750, However for some reason VW suspension system parts replacement tends to be a little more complicated & time consuming that other common cars. Is your 2012 Golf AWD or FWD?
Yeah that old thread reminds me that the shop originally quoted $550. I didn’t have the work done and they quoted again a few days ago, but this time it was $1200!
Pick up the phone, being nice when you talk to them, and just ask them what the difference is… They could have had a covid sale then or used parts that are discontinued now, priced wrong then, priced wrong now, or has the cost of parts and labor really went up that much, or whatever, just ask if you normally like using there shop, or it might be time to fire them and find another shop, but make sure you can find another shop 1st, don’t shoot yourself in the foot… lol
