Avalon: P0012 P0014 and a noise after valve cover gasket

I have a myriad of issues after doing the bank 1 valve cover gasket kit, and all 6 coils and plugs. Shortly after starting up, there was a P0335 for the Crankshaft position sensor. After a few miles there was also a p0012 or P0014 for camshaft timing. A new crankshaft position sensor fixed the first code, but the second codes have been persistent.

Changing the oil seemed to make the codes appear slower for a little while. But this didn’t last long. Replacing the OCV’s had no effect.

Another, more concerning thing is a noise that developed simultaneously. It sounded at first almost like a fan or a CD player that was tapping while spinning. It sounded like it was coming from the middle of the dash (which is I guess where bank 1 is, behind the dash). It began to happen predictably whenever I punched the accelerator, and for a longer period, like a few seconds. It may have become a little louder.

I found a YT video of what may be the sound, but that car is idling. There is a single comment below it that says “replace timing belt tensioner ASAP”. I also went to a Japanese specialist and the guy at the counter suggested it may be the timing chain based on what I told him.

Someone on reddit thought it was an oil pressure issue, and to check the oil pressure and maybe drop the pan. I’ve been suspecting the whole time that something may have gotten inside the engine and obstructed the oil flow. It is not in the oil filter or the VVT filter. I want to drop the pan but I’d also have to remove or partially remove the exhaust Y pipe.

To summarise, I have persistent p0012 and P0014 codes for camshaft B advanced and Camshaft A retarded. I am also having a sound after I accelerate moderately that a lasts a few seconds or until I let off the pedal

The youtube video with a similar noise. Its happens at about :04 and :26.

If the engine has over 100,000 miles, worn timing chain/guides can cause both of those codes.

Especially if you’re hearing noises from the engine.

I think that the timing chains normally throw a code like p0016 or p0017 meaning the crankshaft and camshaft are out of sync.

It could all be the timing chain. OTOH, the thread with the video I posted said he had a sludged engine and that flushing/changing the oil would improve it for a few hundred miles.

Maybe getting a p0335 crankshaft and then camshaft codes is kind of like getting a p0016/17 for crankshaft and camshaft. But the P0335 went away with a new sensor.

There are 3 O-Rings that go between the camshaft bearing caps and the valve cover, if these O-Rings are missing, there will be no oil pressure for the camshaft actuators. See the black arrows below.

If the engine is sludged, that could cause the hydraulic tensioners for the timing chains not to properly tensioin the timing chain guides.

having just rebuilt (to a degree) a 2grfe, I can say there seem to be no way for the engine to supply oil to the chain tensioners. I can compress mine by hand.

The orings were in the Fel-Pro kit and I’m 98% sure that I used them.
