Animals nesting on gas tank and eating it

my Honda Fit check engine light came on and the diagnosis was at first an emissions issue - Honda fixed it, but the light was still on. Further investigation found a nest on top of the gas tank and chew marks through the hose that is connected. Honda has to replace the whole gas tank - do you have any advice on how to keep animals from nesting under my car. I do drive it, 5 days to work each week, but I was away for 4 days just before the check engine light came on.

IMHO the best advice for rhodent control comes from the state Department of Agriculture offices. They’re actual experts in the subject and their advice is free.
