Sorry, nonsense. I’d bet a fair sum that any engine maintained the same way with other name brand synthetics would encounter IDENTICAL engine wear.
Agree 100%…but for argument sake…let’s say Amsoil does protect better. How much better? Since many of us here can keep their engines running hundreds of thousands of miles on NON-AMSOIL oil…then any added protection by Amsoil is totally meaningless.
One of my previous engineering jobs in the Telecom industry we designed and built a digital voice communication system. Ours was by far the best out there. We had an industry leading less then 5 bits per million bits loss. Our closest competitor was 20bits loss. Sounds impressive doesn’t it. For digital voice - it would be IMPOSSIBLE for to hear any difference. The loss rate would have to hundreds if not thousands (depending on frequency - higher pitch the lower rate) before you could hear a difference.
Was our product superior? - Significantly better. Did it make a difference? - Not one bit (pardon the pun).
That is not the ten or so links in this thread states.
You may feel that way but that is what the study states.
Seriously I got what I needed from this thread and unfortunately I am not retired to spend more time here. This thread attracted over 1k viewers. Thanks for those who contributed and also for those who substantiated their claims. Sorry I do not have any more time for this. Bye.
@MikeInNH
If the ten or so links doesn’t answer your questions, pls challenge AMS, M1 or … for an independent study. I am sorry I do not have more time for you on this topic. Or ask the lab that tests oil or consumer reports.
if you find anything conclusive and that can be substantiated pls share with me. I have an open mind.
All you’ve shown is marketing hype. Nothing more. Nothing but extremely ignorant arguments.
And you keep avoiding my questions…
What I do with my car is not going to be statistically significant.
That is why we depend on tests like Consumer Reports and the like.
incorrect…@JoeMario has it correct. If you make it 300k miles on these extended oil changes, let us know.
@pyrolord314
Please ask oil manufacturers, testing labs, Consumer Reports and the like.
Individual results are inconclusive. There are so many factors could affect the end result.
So then you don’t know it’s better…you just believe the marketing hype.
But you keep missing the point - AGAIN.
So what if it’s better. It makes no difference. I can keep a vehicle well over 300k miles without using AMS so why should I switch. And since you obviously never keep a vehicle too long…then you’re WASTING money.
Firstly you have a wrong assumption
Secondly, my money saving calc was on yearly basis.
Why should I? I’m not the one making the claims for in favor of Amsoil. I can add the opinion of my Father-in-law who has been DIY’ing their family fleet for over 2 decades and has also used a hodgepodge list of motor oils (none of them Amsoil) and kept many of his vehicles long past 200k (offhand I can think of a 91 Subaru Legacy and an 05 Focus, but I know he’s had several others that passed the 200k mark). My parents don’t do DIY work on their vehicles (I’ll do their oil changes for them if I’m around) and they have had a Prius and Carolla go over 200k and they definitely aren’t using Amsoil. My Grandmother recently retired her 01 Outback with over 250k and never used Amsoil. Shall I go on?
Myself and many others rejected that calc because you made some wild assumptions. You come here and then state as fact (false fact) that you can go 12k miles on AMS. This is based totally on the AMS marketing hype you fell for. In the same breath you REJECT Mobil-1’s claim of 12k miles oil change. You still base your calculations on the 3k oil changes which no one uses.
You’ve presented ZERO proof that using AMS with a 12k oil change interval will keep an engine running over 300k miles…ZERO PROOF. And since myself and others here keep their vehicles a very long time using AMS would be a very costly experiment which I’m not willing to take.
Believe it or not - I looked into AMS several times over the years. Probably before you were born. It wasn’t worth it then and still isn’t worth it now.
Last point…I only use synthetic (Mobil1) on my SUV’s. Mainly because I tow a camper a lot in the summer and we go skiing almost every weekend where morning temps can easily reach -30. But my wifes cars (87 Accord, 96 Accord and current 07 Lexus) use nothing buy dino oil (mainly Castrol). Both Accords went well past 300k miles. Gave 96 Accord to our niece who sold it with over 400k miles. So tell me again where the AMS cost savings is?
@VOLVO-V70
Pls see post #34
@MikeInNH
If my calc are not good enough pls contribute by revised calculation - maybe there are multiple scenarios, each deserve a new calc. Go for it!
Appreciate it.
Perhaps it might be prudent to realize that nobody’s mind is going to be changed here and to put this to rest.
@jdmere
I really learned and changed my mind.
I will be an informed consumer. I was sold on the misleading label of “Full Syn” - not anymore.
Yes its time to rest.
Heh heh. In Minnesota we call it the long good bye. Takes a couple of frustrating hours at least and ends with a toot of the horn when they finally drive away. You only hope it doesn’t take so long that another meal is required or an over-night. So from the #144 good bye to #157, that’s pretty long but could go past 200?
At any rate one of the first rules in sales is to not over sell. Once you make the sale, close the deal and go home. Keep talking and you might lose it, just like fishing. So I’m going back to Mobil 1 after 157 posts. (psst, I never really left in the first place-just making a point)
So as they say in Minnesota “Good Bye” Toot toot.
@bing
I value you as a member in this forum. See ya another time
We say after 3 days fish and visitors stink, Give them a waving goodbye from the drive when they leave! Buds from FL visited the cabins, that was their motto also thank goodness. How do you want us to leave the guest cabin, hotel clean we call it, wipe the counters, vacuum, change the sheets, they want to come again next year. I am not a maid for guests!
