Can I trust the color indicator or do you need to open and physically check the filter for changing?

Color indicator?? '99 Suburban?? What?? Change it when it needs changing, best determined by removing it and inspecting it…
Like Caddyman, I have never heard of a “color indicator” for changing an air filter.
Open the filter box, take out the filter, and hold it up to the light in order to see how much light passes through the filter. If very little light passes through, it is ready for changing regardless of how few miles have been logged since it was installed.
Yes. You can trust the indicator. When the pressure drop across the filter becomes excessive the indicator will show red.

Once again, Tester explains it.
Tester is awesome.
